How to download all photos from iCloud into a desktop folder?

Please tell me what I am seeing online, that this can't be done and each photo has to be downloaded individually, isn't true?
I'm reading that Apple has disabled this feature from iCloud in an effort to force you to buy more storage.

My wife (no pics) had been struggling with this too. You might try setting your iPhone/iPad to maintain full res pics on it and then plug it into your computer and copy the files off of it.

We are dealing with this too. I haven't found a solution.
