How do i get Google search results to stop appearing in chrome tab on Android ?

not sure what you're asking but i killed chrome on my android about 6 months ago and have been using brave instead and i couldn't be happier. i don't miss chrome AT ALL. i lost zero functionality moving to Brave and maybe i'm 1% less under google's spell now.

Have you tried clearing history & cookies often & doing your "personal searches" with incognito mode

I search for something in Google. I click on a result. Before, I could just swipe up and the Google search app would close out.

ah i see. yes when doing a google search on an android you're usually in this 'quasi browser' state and you get the option to open it in a browser window or not.
seems like maybe you modified a settings somewhere to automatically open search results in a browser or the OS or browswr behavior changed.
