What do you mean by dead? That makes a yuuuge difference.

If the laptop is dead you might be able to transfer the hard drive into an external case and plug it into a USB port to retrieve the data.

I've never had it done, but I do know that the cost is highly variable ($100 to multiple thousands) depending on the type of damage and drive. Sorry I don't have any recs other than to choose a shop with a no data no fee policy.

It's a PC (if that makes a difference) that won't boot up because the hard drive is not recognized. I had it tested and they told me the hard drive didn't spin (?) and was completely dead.

Expensive! I looked into it 5 or so years ago when I accidently killed my drive array. I search around and found software that could read a broken drive (this drive wasn't physically broken like a bad drive head, then your screwed and have to pay the price). It took time and a lot of hand wringing, but I was able to recover most everything, there were some files that were corrupted (photos & music), but I would say I got back 99.7+% of what was there. If the drive has physically failed, then the recovery companies will dissemble the drive and move the disks to another drive and then try to pull the data off. As long as the head didn't crash into the disk, they can usually get the data back.

The following was taken from the provendatarecovery.com website.

Basic hard drive data recovery costs average between $100 and $700, based on these factors

If your broken hard drive needs advanced recovery, you should expect the average cost of data recovery to be between $700 – $2,000

My guess is the data is ok and the platters will need to be transplanted into another drive. You will have to pay for the donor drive plus the labor costs. Sorry still can't ballpark it for you, you're going to have to make some calls.

Thanks. Doesn't sound exorbitantly expensive. Will take your advice and make some calls.

I have personally used this place. I thought it was a scam based on the name of the company but I swear to you that the service they provided to me is the absolute best customer service experience I have had in my 47 years of life. If I ever have a hard drive that needs to be recovered, this is the only option for me. They inform you of every single phase of repair from the day you send it to them to days after you receive the drive back. I had sent my drive to the expensive guys for evaluation and they quoted me over 2K, I had the same drive recovered for 650 and 300 of that was buying a donor drive.

I sent a dead drive to a "recovery company" a few years back.

Estimate was for $2K to recover. I said, no thanks, not that important.

They lowered the price to $1.5K. Again, not thanks.

They then said, "hey look, we've already done the work", we'd like to make the sale. We eventually settled for around $300 or so. And they threw in the hard drive.

Numbers are approximate, as it was a long time ago.

Moral: Negotiate

Yeah, I saw their ad on Facebook. I have it bookmarked as an option. Good to know they are reputable because you just never know. Thanks.

Like I said, I can't say enough good about the service they provided me. Best of luck!
