Looking to have a couple of security cameras installed to cover front and rear entrances of my home.

Local alarm company (been using them for 20+ years) wants $1400 to install two wired 4MP cameras and one glass sensor (for one bedroom), plus an extra $6/month to monitor the glass sensor.

This would be a supplement to our existing system (all doors and windows have contacts plus 3 motion detectors that cover hallways). Break-ins, smoke/fire, etc. are also already monitored by this company.

I know nothing about this stuff (wired vs. wireless cameras). Does their proposal sound realistic/reasonable ?

To me, not worth it. For you, maybe it's worth it to have someone come out and you have a turnkey system. For $1400 I would get a couple Nest cams and install myself. They have two different outdoor cameras, one is $200, the other is $400. I also wouldn't worry about the glass break alarm as a window getting smashed is kind of an alarm in itself. I wouldn't pay for monitoring either. My experience with monitored systems was it still took the cops around 30-45 minutes to make it out to my shop.

If you simply want cameras, I'd go with the Amazon Blink XT system. I have them at my house and they work well. Start recording on motion and you can do a live view as well. Doesn't have a monthly fee either.

Pretty much all alarm companies are a bad deal. Especially now. You can buy 3 wifi ip cameras off amazon for cheap. They'll record all the time to a microsd card on the camera and connect to an app. You can then access all the 'film' right on your phone or if something happens and you need the real thing, you can grab a ladder and take it out to save on the computer.

Most of the time you can just mount them up under the eaves and snake a cat 5e lan cable in the attic to power it. Or use a system and buy a name brand nvr. I have a reolink 4 camera 5mp system and it works good for work. But at home, I just have cheap $25 wyze cams under the eaves for over a year now and they're still ticking and probably easiest to use.
