I picked this one up about a week ago and I'm happy with it so far, wasn't looking to spend too much.

Lorex raised their prices for this sale. They also typically have a standard 15% off coupon daily.

What kind of camera/system are you looking for? local recordings or cloud? battery or wired?

I have been wanting to make my own. Locally recorded, but possibly available to at least view live over the web. But I want my own DVR and total control over it. I also want all POE camera's or wifi. I don't want to have to run all kinds of AV wires.

I had a Synology at one point doing exactly what you what. It's primary purpose was to be my local NAS but it's a very versatile device and you can get just about any size device for your budget. Bc Synology isn't primarily used for there Surveillance Station, I had buy a license for each camera beyond the first one ($50/each). I'm not sure if that is still required but they have a very long list of compatible cameras so you aren't limited to a brand or style of camera.
Several others here suggest Blue Iris but I have never used it.

I installed a SV3C 1080p camera off Amazon for $35. They also have a 5Mp version for $50. Camera has both Poe and ONVIF. I use iSpy on a local server for keeping recording. If I want to view the cameras I VPN into my local network and either view the cameras through iSpy or their IP address.

Put one of their systems in my house about 2 months ago. So far I've been pleased.
