SONOS describes exactly what I want, but at $200 a speaker for the lowest one...that's $1600 just in speakers. I can't imagine I'd spend that much on a wired system.

You don't have to use sonos speakers. Hard wire your speakers in the ceiling, then connect sonos to your receiver that is connected to your speakers.

Maybe just run the speaker wire for future

I think he was asking whether the wiring was already present. So to be clear: the project is currently entire in the planning stage with no wire to any of the 8 locations and no components of the setup has been purchased to date, correct?

Correct. The house doesn't even exist yet. Break ground tomorrow if the weather cooperates.

If this is the start of the project, wire the speakers to a central location. That's not hard to do, and you can set up the speakers you want at that price point.

After that, sonos is not a bad option and you could add additional components as needed. At the very least you would have everything set up and installed and ready for future improvements.

I had two determining factors for going the sonos way. 1- I wanted multi room speaker control and the ability to play anything throughout those rooms. 2- I wanted to do it from my iPad or iPhone. (Needed to be mobile). Sonos met those items for me and works so well that I walk in from work and my wife is actually playing music.

With your house, I would take the stance to future proof everything. And by running speakers (1-2 or whatever) to a central location, you will be leaps and bounds above 90% of the market.

As a disclaimer, I love my Sonos set up and have stated this on the board before. It's not as expensive as you think, and I would be glad to answer more questions to help out if needed. <<<@gmail.com.

Edit: HopefulDoc, I'd love to know what you do, sounds like we like the same things...haha

My thoughts as well. I've got the same set up as you. All speakers run to a central media closet. I have dial volume controls in each room for volume. I've got a speaker switch in the media closet so I can control each room from there. I love my sonos

Saw your original post. Didn't see your edit til just now. I study medicine by day and read up on/buy a ton of tech stuff by night. I used to have a job in IT before med school. Or maybe I'm missing the point of your question...?

Alright Doc, I know you're probably sick of me, but I thought I had identified what I wanted to do. I've purchased stereo speakers and this past weekend I ran all the speaker wires from a central media closet. I identified the A/V receiver that I thought I wanted for HDMI switching. Will not be doing surround sound at this time. I have a friend who ran one set of wires from his receiver to a speaker switch and then ran all his speakers from that. But it appears I've overlooked the inability to watch TV and use a streaming service built into the receiver like Spotify or Pandora simultaneously. I think the only way to achieve this is to get a dedicated HDMI switch and just use the receiver to power the speakers, or get a dedicated amp to run to the speaker selector...I was SOOOOO dang close.

SONOS is not an expensive solution. It gives you a ton of flexibility in how and where you use the system. You can have moving zones with SONOS. By the time you run the speaker wire and buy the speakers, amps, volume controls and sources you could have just done something like SONOS for less money and without cutting any holes in walls.

This.

Not sick of you at all. Always happy to provide amateur-level service for free when I can find the time.

Go into a little more depth about your setup. I'll give you what I think you're saying, and if it's right, you can just say "yeah" or something like that. You strictly have one zone (your TV watching room), with your cable box/satellite box running through the receiver and the problem is that you want picture on the tv from the box but sound from the streaming service on the speakers in the same room?

ETA- this is where exact receiver and TV models (and cable/directv box model) would help so I (or anyone else) could look up the weird specs and online faq that probably aren't/weren't crossing your mind when you bought it. (Ex: Sony STR-DH720 receiver, Sony KDL-hx729 TV, Cox (ok, you caught me, I only know the Sony product lines by heart)).

So I thought it'd be easier to just show this. I'm guessing that the streaming stuff is an input and I can't watch TV and listen to spotify at the same time? What's the easiest way to achieve?

You want TV in the living room with Spotify in the other rooms or Spotify in the living room? (TV picture with no sound)?

What you want is easily achieved with most multi-zone receivers. Check your return policy- if there is still time, consider returning yours for one with that capability.

If that's not an option, I would consider an HDMI switch in the closet and running each device's sound into the receiver separately.

There are other options. These are probably the two easiest that do not require running any cable.

ETA: should say "any extra cable through the wall"

I haven't bought the receiver yet just the one I was eyeing. I'll check for that feature with that one. Thanks again Doc!

No problem. If it has 2 discrete zones and streaming services, you should be able to route the service to either zone and any hdmi input to either zone.

Yamaha RX-V577 RX-V477 Receivers
Backing a bit off the multi-zone and upscaling feature-set, the RX-V577 and RX-V477 still include a Zone B speaker output as well as dual subwoofer outputs. Both of these receivers also have six HDMI inputs and one output. They will pass-through 4K, 3D and utilize HDMI’s Audio Return Channel feature so you can get audio from your television’s tuner back to your AV receiver for transmitting that sound to your speakers—all without having to run another cable. Both the RX-V577 and RX-V477 Receivers feature a discrete amp configuration and 192 kHz/24-bit Burr-Brown DACs for all channels.

Per the comparison chart on Amazon, there's not a discrete Zone 2 amplifier in the v477. There may be a line out for zone 2 (I think I see an RCA out on the image but it is small. I can't decide if it's an output for the r/l or second zone), but if you want different audio on the tv and the other zones, you'll need a separate amp between the receiver and the speaker selector. The 577 seems to do what you want. Read the FAQ scrupulously, but usually receivers with discrete zone 2 amps will allow you to use one of the receiver's streaming services in addition to one of the digital inputs.
