I recently realized all of my photos and music are stored on a 10 year old laptop and not backed up anywhere. So I bought 200gb Google drive backup and an external hard drive to start backing up everything. I also went through my music library and re-cataloged it as I plan to start using my old iPod again and expanding my music collection.

I need a way to sync music and photos between all devices. Basically, mapped like this:
- Photos on my phone —> Google Photos —> PC —> external HD
- Music on my PC —> Google Drive / external HD

The problems I’m having are:
1) I can’t get Google photos to sync with my PC
2) I want to be able to plug in my external HD to my PC and it check for changes and update and changes. Just a one way sync.

Hopefully I explained this well enough. Any ideas?

I would avoid Google if you care at all about privacy.

Synology NAS is a good option.

It’s music and photos. For the time being, I think a Synology setup would be overkill.

Don’t think I reviewed cloud storage services closely enough. Might ditch Google and switch to Mega which will solve my phone to pc sync issue.

Then might use a free sync service like syncthing for my pc to external hd.

Sounds like you should just use onedrive.

Couple bucks a month for 100G. Five bucks for 1000g plus full personal ms365.

If you want a physical backup drive also, just go to onedrive, change location to backup drive, sync, then change back.

Google or Apple photos may not sync because they don’t automatically download to your PC from Google cloud or iCloud. Your folder may just show file names and previews until you switch the settings.

I had OneDrive, and maybe I just don’t fully understand it, but I did not like it at all. It kept replicating folders and moving photos around when it would sync with my PC.

Otherwise agreed that Google and Apple won’t let me sync to my PC. I think something like DropBox or Mega would. Guess I’m not opposed to OneDrive, but I’m afraid to use it after spending hours looking for missing files last week.

You need to realize all of these programs are cloud-first. The cloud is the master copy and will make changes as you do, but not instantly.
It is no more expensive than buying large SSDs and can be accessed anywhere from any machine. What is not to love?
I think you can force iCloud and Google to sync to your PC but it definitely is not default. It’s been several years since I’ve stored anything anywhere except for the cloud.

I don’t want the cloud to be the master copy, at least not for music, because I manage music with iTunes which I prefer to reference a local drive.

I’m really only using cloud as part of 3-2-1 for data backup/storage. My fear with having music on the cloud and sync’ing to my PC is if somehow my cloud account is compromised or somehow something gets deleted/changed then I lose my library on my pc too. Ideally, I’d have the library backed up on external hd so not the end of the world, but not ideal.

Edit: I also would not make changes in the cloud. Only upload photos from my phone. Music-wise, everything happens on my PC - either downloading new music or ripping cd’s.

3-2-1 backup theory.

3 copies,
2 types of media
1 offsite.

That’s what I’m trying to do, but think I need a better offsite solution than Google.

Also need a software that can sync/update between my pc and external hd. I know these things exist, just need to research. Was hoping for some suggestions here.

Syncthing is very popular for multi-device sync.

I use rsync and robocopy scripts for pushing files one-way. Rclone is another option.

This.

I use it to push photos from my phone to my server and then Immich picks them up from there.

I use files.com. It’s hosted ftp that is very secure. You can block ip addresses outside the us from accessing. Also has sharing features to share folders.

So, think I have things sorted out now.

I switched from Google Drive to Mega. Mega offers both cloud sync and cloud backup. I have all of my old photos and my iTunes on cloud backup, and a “Camera Uploads” folder that is sync’d with my phone camera on cloud sync. The old photos should remain unchanged, my iTunes will push changes from my PC to cloud backup, recent photos taken will dump into the Camera Uploads folder where I can sort them later. In theory, should work how I want.

I also decided on FreeFileSync to one way sync all of my local PC media to my external HD. It’s mirroring the data as I type.
