Don’t know a ton about Ethernet cables but I need to pick one for my dorm room.

Need to connect it from an Xbox or Smart TV to one of these things.

Just find a Cat 7 in the length you need and call it a day. As long as you don't buy one that costs 99 cents, you'll be fine.

Go ahead and search Amazon for Cat 7 cables and let me know the difference in price. I’ll wait.

You'll be waiting a long time. I don't care how cheap cat 7 , cat5e will do everything this person needs.

There are three LAN ports in the Cisco box I believe. I’m thinking Smart TV and Xbox in two of the ports. So I actually need two cables. One for each

It's not the difference in price. For what he wants there's no difference in performance. When we run category cabling in data centers it is CAT6. Not A but regular CAT6.

Gotcha. You could also just get one long patch cable, a cheap 4/5 port switch and 2 short patch cables.

Pretty much any cables you get will be fine.

You’re running (possibly literally) miles of cable. He’s running fifty feet or less, next to who knows what. So for a difference of like $2, Cat 7 means shielding.

I’m genuinely surprised at the pushback. If there was a significant difference in price? Or he was buying locally and had limited options? Sure. But unless I’m missing something, if you’re just picking cables off of Amazon, I can’t fathom a reason not to just pick Cat 7 for basically the same price instead of going lower and gaining literally nothing.

But again, I could be missing something. Do either of you have a reason to pay basically the same amount of money for a Cat 5 or 6 cable instead of just going with Cat 7?

Further more, the Cat 7 can possibly be used at his next residence whereas a 5e will likely be obsolete

CAT7 doesn’t have a standard and is not TIAA approved. There is zero reason to run it. If you need shielded category cable in a residence you have no clue as to how to run cable or knowledge of building codes. By you, I mean the theoretical you who chooses to pull CAT7 in a house.

ETA: The OP is asking about a patch cable. The point is that with a patch cable there not one iota of performance gain. I’d buy a properly terminated CAT6 patch cable with boots and be done with it. Well, I’d make my own but you get my drift.

Plug your CAT7 into that 5e adapter and get better speeds.

It's not shielding if its not grounded. At that point it's an antenna and doing more harm than good.
It's also time you stopped digging this hole you're in. VAbuckeye knows what he is talking about.

It's quite clear VA knows what they are talking about, and knows vastly more than I do about networking. I've said/asked repeatedly: "if the price is the same, why wouldn't I go with Cat 7? Tell me what I'm missing."

So now I have an answer: if you aren't going to make sure your cable is grounded, you're better off unshielded.

Read the entire thread again. That's the first time an answer other than "because it's not necessary" was offered
