Help me pick a laptop!

I built cabinets as a side job and bought some new software to design and crate cultist. My old laptop crawled out on me and I’m in the market for a new one. The software has 3d drawing capabilities. What is the bang for my buck? What size processor? And any other info you could give me on helping me make the right choice.

Gonna need a budget. 3D drawing is going to require some horsepower, so prepare to open up that wallet.

Not if he is using SketchUp. It doesn't require too much. And they have a web version.

Consider the Dell XPS 13 inch or 15 inch. They have gotten great reviews on cnet.com, and can be spec'd out with all the latest and greatest hardware.
They have UHD/4k touchscreen options, and of course that increases the price. There are non-touchscreen models as well.

Would really like to stay around $1000. I run it now on an i5 processor. When laptop was new it ran fine and quick enough for me. But if I’m being honest I would like it to move a little quicker. I’m just not too savvy on this ddr, ssd, and the hz talk. The program is called mozaik for cabinet building.

Found this on their website. I'd be shooting for something with higher than the rec specs for RAM and graphics.
FWIW, I used to do a lot, still do a little, of 3D modeling on my PC with an i5-750, 16GB RAM and 1050 Ti 4GB video card. Not the most up-to-date specs, but it runs Fusion360 and AutoCAD really smooth.

Would you recommend an Acer name brand? Does name brand really matter as long as I get the right size internal hardware?

I don't have any experience with Acer's stuff. I think if you find a particular model you should be able to dig up some reviews on it to see if it is worth it or not. I would say brand probably matters more in laptops than it does in PCs since laptop design is really a practice of "how can I construct this thing so it destroys itself the slowest". So, while the major pieces may all come from the same place there is a certain level of proprietary parts that get used and how things are arranged/airflow/etc. will determined how long that internal hardware last and how it performs.

The Acer Aspire 5 w/ 15.6" screen shows up on a few lists of laptops good for autocad.....I've been shopping too. I would get 16gb of ram and the NVIDIA GeForce MX150 graphics card (make sure its the G1-A1 variant chipset but most sites won't have this info posted. you will need to contact them to get this info. The LG-A1 variant is in Asus and Lenovo and slower than the G1-A1 variant). Here is an article LINK

SSD will be a bit faster than spinning HD. But you only need a big enough SSD for your operating system, software apps and paging file, although I'm no expert. So 256 gigs is big enough but get 500 if you can. For project file storage a spinner is fine. So I guess a combo. I keep my project files on an external drive.

SSD is miles better than HDD. Do not get an HDD nor hybrid as your primary storage.
