Help - imail client on imac with gmail account is miserably slow

I've had macs for about 15 years now, run the imail program that comes with mac for my email client. Have gmail. The imail client is unbelievably slow to update with new emails, send emails, and even type in sometimes. Anyone else have this issue? What is a good solution using gmail as my email account? I don't want to use the gmail online account - that layout blows.

What blows about it? I find it much nicer than the mail app on the Mac. Plus they keep improving gmail.

I used to use Mac mail or whatever it's called, but now I'm 100% gmail web and Outlook. I gave up trying to screw around with a gmail client and I regret wasting so much time fighting the web interface.
