Go try it out, why not. I'm doing the reverse, but when you have an SO that has been on Apple the entire time, it's not like it'll be a huge change for me. I liked Android a lot, but 98% of my friends are on Apple and I want to try out the Apple watch, so I figured now is a good time to switch sides for a bit.
I'm in the EXACT same boat. Wife has iPhone and so does my mom as well as 95% of my friends. I went android and lost iMessage and more importantly the ability to FaceTime to my mom who lives out of state. That's invaluable when you want to facetime quickly with your parents to talk with your kids, etc.
I personally am on the Samsung S7 Edge and I find it not nearly as good as the iPhone based on OS. The "snappiness" and "crispness" of apps on the iPhone seemed more fluid than it does on Android. I find I have to restart my S7 edge every few days. Never had to do that on iPhone (maybe 1 time a month?).
It's all personal preference though.

All you have to do is ask your mom to download a different video chat app other than FaceTime. You act like that's a knock on android but really its a knock on Apple. Apple is the one that closes their apps to android. Android opens its apps to Apple.

The real sin for the new iPhones is raising the price and building in wireless and fast charging, yet providing no accessories in the box to take advantage of them.

It has built in wifi, but doesn't come with a router? It has built in cellular, but I have to pay extra for service? It has built in bluetooth, but no bluetooth accessories come with it? It has iMessage, but doesn't come with friends to message with?

Different business models, and many people don't go for cross-platform apps/services when they already like/use the built-in and often superior app/service.

You responded to me and quoting someone else's quote. That's a no no bud. Luckily i agree with his comment so im ok with it.

Sure, that's easy to you and I but I tried to get her to use Google Duo and you would've thought I asked her to change a piston in her engine.
Simplicity is the name of the game when it comes to wife, kids and parents.

Yep
I don't blame Android
It's just easier for me to switch than to try and get everyone else in my life, who largely are very simplistic when it comes to tech, to switch.

Agreed. Now my problem is the wife has iPhone 7 and original apple watch. I have S7 Edge and want to swap back to iPhone. Need to figure out best approach.
I'm thinking:
-I get iPhone 8plus
-She gets new Apple Watch
-Eventually I get new Apple Watch
First world problems are the best.

That's pretty silly in multiple ways. Charging a phone is fundamental to being able to use it at all, and making that necessary activity more convenient is one way manufacturers differentiate themselves and justify higher prices. Apple did raise the price over the 7, and there's little else new in the 8 that seems worth paying that premium for. The most noticeable difference, the glass body, is to enable a feature that doesn't work OOTB with what they supply. Ditto for the fast charging capability, which requires purchasing a USB-C/Lightning cable and new charger, roughly $75 total from what I understand. They're still providing a charger and cable, just not "a good one," unless they surprise everyone when they start shipping.

On the topic of wireless charging the new iPhones - Can I use an existing fast charge or regular charge wireless pad from Samsung (for my S7 Edge) and charge the iPhone with that?
Posted on 9/14/17 at 10:31 am to DoubleDown
Any Qi pad should work. Apple will not have a branded one 'til next year.

wait are y'all saying apple is promoting the X as a 'fast charge' device yet charging extra for that cable/adapter?
i get not including a qi pad, that's optional but to intetionally ship a $1,000.00 phone with a crippled charger is just crimminal.

wait til you hear about the 69 dollar wireless charging case they're selling separately from the 160 dollar (rather shitty) airpods

whoa, wait
they are using the Qi this year and then rebranding with their own wireless charging system next year? i hope that is not what you mean

Yeah his analogies really missed the mark.

I meant Apple is not going to be releasing its own wireless charger until next year. They showed a pad capable of charging three devices, with the iPhone monitoring their progress. As far as anyone knows, this pad will be based on Qi, and it will have to contain three coils to work.

i have a full fake leather wallet case on my nexus 6 and the little 'wood box' clock/qi charger is able to charge it without taking it out of the case.
its kind-of creepy if you think about it. i wasn't on board with the whole 'cell phones cause brain tumors' before but if enough energy to charge a lithium battery can pass through a leather case then WTF is that doing to the sdie of your head?
eta this is the charger on my nightstand i'm talking about
