I’m not sure if this is the correct board, but I’m finally looking to upgrade my 1070 GPU. My PC is used for mostly gaming now (my son has take it over). I’d like to be able to play any game though and can see myself getting into Starfield. Any suggestion on a good GPU to pair? I know the 4090s are argued to be the best, but I’m not trying to spend top dollar. I would rather spend on a “smart” buy than the most expensive buy.

Probably get more responses on Gaming, but this is fine.

4090 is the best, not arguable. But very pricey. The current best value in my opinion is the 6950xt from last generation. But, just depends on how much you want to spend.

I appreciate the response. I’m trying to get a handle on GPU pricing as it has been awhile since I last took a deep dive researching for a new GPU. I’ve had heard the pricing has been inflated. I tried watching review videos and basically all I walk away from getting out of them is “this GPU is better, but at the price, it is not worth it.” However I’m upgrading a 1070, so maybe it isn’t that hard to find good upgrade?

So hard to answer how much do I want to spend. I want to buy a good GPU like the 1070. It has worked for years, preformed well, wasn’t the “best” when I bought it, and didn’t kill my budget, so a “smart” buy, not the “best” buy.

It isn't. Literally anything you buy new in 2023 will beat the breaks off of a 1070.

I appreciate where you're trying to come from, but the GPU market is vastly more complex today than it was in 2016. And even then, I've given my best "generic best value" answer of the 6950xt. Beyond that, you'll need to give vastly more detail. What games do you play? At what resolution? At what graphics settings? At what framerate? As years go on, where is your breakpoint on settings quality and resolution before you will feel compelled to upgrade? RT or no? Open to upscaling tech or absolutely want to stick with native resolution?

"Smart" buy in a vacuum immediately becomes not smart if it doesn't actually fit your needs.

I just upgraded from my gtx 970- so I feel you. GPU User Benchmark
This was a site I used to help me kind of figure things out from a speed/affordability standpoint. I ended up buying a used 3060 TI from Ebay for just over $200 and feel like I got exactly what I wanted without spending a fortune. It was a huge upgrade for me and is still a fast card even though it's 3 years old

These are the questions. This is the way.

Sure, a 4090 is the best card but it's very pricey, and if you're driving a 1080p monitor it's WAY overkill. The just released AMD 7800XT is getting very strong reviews and it's $500. If your son is not playing on a 4K display that's a solid starting point to use as a reference.
