So, I ended up locked out of my iphone. Once back in I had to restore to the last backup which was in January. So, all of my photos from then are gone. No problem, google photos should have them stored, nope. I thought that was whole point of google photos. Any ideas?

Check and see through the browser on a desktop/laptop - maybe it is just a sync issue?

apple doesn't allow the google photos app to sync when its not running. blame apple.
you have to open the app occasionally to 'kick off' the sync process unlike on an android.

Plus when you do free up space you have to back into apple photos and do a second step to truly free up space.
I shake my head at apple photos man.

apple backs up all data in a 'blob' including photos which goes to the cloud
google photos 'frees up space' by killing all the photos & video *ON THE PHONE* so the phone space has been freed up..but everything apple backs up into the cloud is still there.
i think he's saying if you're running out of apple cloud space due to photos & video, having a google cloud with those same photos wont help you out if you are hitting the maximum space on apple's cloud and you have to pay to upgrade.

SIAP, but you still have to periodically sync your photos.

Google photos even tells you you have to go back into apple photos and delete the "recently deleted" folder or something like that.
It's not a big deal, it's just not that seamless. And Apple photos is to blame.

Kind of sounds like it honestly. But I'm no expert.

this is honestly such a WTF thing for apple who prides themselves on 'user friendly' and 'highest quality photos of any phone' and 'user focused' to not have attempted to copy google's unlimited photo & video storage model and ease of use.
its truly a WTF that apple makes the iphone backups such a miserable experience on the cloud.
i remember several years ago (knowing nothing about apple) and having had google photos since what seems like 15 years..telling my wife who was asking about some photos she had deleted off her iphone 'oh you can view all your photos on apples website because they get backed up there' and a frustrating 2 hours later when i realized apple uploaded a "blob" that you couldn't actually crack open and view/edit/share the images online in a browser.
i assume they've evolved since this and i'm the first person to bitch about google when they release shite products but this is truly a huge gaping hole in apple's 'ease of use' bullshite that reeks of a money-grab and 'circling the wagons on a closed system' so other non-apple people 'cant enjoy' your apple world unless they also have iphones and a full fledged membership in the cult of apple.
i was a huge fan of picasa for photo management prior to google photos and i lost functionality; some of which like red-eye reduction still inexplicably arent part of google photos..but google photos is a fricking great product. unlimited storage of photographs up to 12mp and HD videos...for FREE? frick yeah whats not to love?
add a google phone to the mix and you get native quality photo storage and 4K video for free too!

Yeah no arguments whatsoever. It's one of their best apps by far.

For Photos that's only now if you aren't using iCloud Photo. If you turn on iCloud Photo and select optimize iPhone storage the original uploads to iCloud and then smaller sizes stay on device. My phone has about 12% of what's on iCloud and zero photos in backup. If you have the storage you can still keep full library on a device or computer while using iCloud Photos, and it no longer double dips into your online storage if you change to iCloud Photo. It may still seem like if at first with backup so large still when first turning on iCloud photo, but storage of photos in backup goes away or if it doesn't happen quick enough you delete old backup and make a fresh back up without it (just make sure full versions of entire library have uploaded first).

So if you didn't have iCloud Photo turned on you have your photos taken before last backup and trying to get back photos taken since backup?
If you have had your Apple ID for awhile & not using iCloud Photo you might have still had access to the older Photo Stream (30 days of pictures only uploaded automatically when on Wifi that doesn't effect iCloud storage that could be seen by devices using same Apple ID). Did you have Photo Stream and turned on and on any other device with same AppleID that you may have downloaded any photos on? Stream would only keep an image for 30 days and only if you had it on, but if any other device downloaded older ones to use they may be on them (computers could see stream as well). On other devices to get off Photo Stream and onto that another devices permanent storage took an action, but I would see some store more than 30 days at times (just didn't know when cache of stream over 30 days would go away). Before iCloud this was just a quick way to see photos on other devices & download ones you wanted without syncing which is why only older Apple IDs have access to it as it was part of what they signed up for. Also why if iCloud is turned on Photo Stream gets turned off.
Also did you ever see photos in Google photo app set up your google account? If so they have to be online with your google account unless somehow deleted online as well and deleted immediately on top of that. If you never set google photo up and/or didn't open app occasionally to copy photos taken or set up a workflow shortcut along with never turning on iCloud Photos or PhotoStream or syncing with a computer then you just have any photos taken since backup that you used in other apps like sending to others or posting on social media as long as you didn't delete from them. Check privacy under settings and see if any other app had access to photos (I think restoring from back up would set setting like it was but not sure, and being last done in Jan would only be for apps installed and their setting as of that Jan backup). Some apps are pretty sneaky about wanting access while sneaking in also approving app uploading of recents to their servers beyond the one you shared or used within app.
iCloud Photo doesn't have same storage as google and works a little differently but not as different as made out in this thread. It's automatically uploaded (you can choose to upload each taken picture/video immediately on cell network/Wifi network or wait to upload large items like videos only when on WiFi or just wait to upload everything once on WiFi). You can't both turn on iCloud Photo and have a separate nightly automatic full stand alone backup of all Photos along with other backup data to icloud as part of iPhone's nightly backups to iCloud when on WiFi, so accidental deletions are gone after 30 days from all linked devices (or immediately if you double up on the accidental deletion part). But if last phone back up was in January it doesn't sound like you are doing automatic nightly iCloud phone back ups anyway. You can still keep full size library both on phone and on iCloud, but you can also keep a reduce size on phone with full size on iCloud (& on other devices that may have more storage like a computer). You can still share photos directly from phone, but you can also share created temporary links to full size photos/videos/shared folder stored on iCloud. You can also view individual photos, videos, and albums yourself by logging into iCloud.com using your Apple ID.
