Getting new smart phone from ATT or other vendors ?

I have ATT service and need to replace an old simple Samsung. Which usually gets you a better deal, buying outright from ATT or buying outright from an online vendor?

Only used swappa once to buy a phone 12 days ago. Paid via PayPal. No communication from seller or swappa. Both ignore me. Protested with PayPal & if seller doesn't reply I get my $ back.
