Bought a simple Gateway laptop last year for kids to use on homework and such. We did buy the insurance for two years which I hope pays off, but before I go claim that…

Today my daughter was doing homework on it. The fan was blowing and suddenly the screen just went dark. Seems like the screen has been a little testy lately but today it just stopped. Computer was still working because the online quiz kept talking and asking if she was going to submit her answer. It was on a table, not a couch or anything that would make it hot. Nothing spilled on it or anything. Called tech support and they had me completely reset the system but it just does the same thing.

Anyone have a Gateway? Has this happened and were you able to fix it? Is it time to make that insurance claim and call it a loss?

Wife has a Mac but needed a windows machine for some programs so got her a gateway laptop. The one that arrived was doa so had that replaced. Been since beginning if this year with no issues, then yesterday it showed powered was on but screen was black. I hard powered off and back on and then it seemed to work fine. Wife said it happened again today but she fixed it.

If the fan went to a high speed, that means something was getting too warm inside the laptop. It's very likely something on the mobo fried just enough to screw your video (motherboards these days have video and sound built into them, not like the old days where sound and video came on separate cards).

In the meantime...

The laptop should have a video output option (Display or HDMI, most likely). Try plugging that in to see if you get video through an external monitor (any HD tv should work, but you may have to get a special adapter for one end if the laptop's video out is not the same as the option on the back of any of your tvs).

If you have the stuff around to do this and it works, you can try running a Windows update (especially since the reset) in the hopes that it was simply a corrupt driver file.

Thanks. Got this because I didn’t want the kids using the Mac I have for my business and messing up something more expensive.

I’ll try the HDMI option and see if I can get it to work!
