Not sure what you mean by ID theft software. Don't be lazy with your personal information, your identity won't be stolen. Or do you mean something like DeleteMe, so ex girlfriends from college can't find you?
I've had a lifetime subscription to VPN Unlimited for years. I lose them way more money than they made from me. Unlimited devices.

I’ve used a bunch of VPNs over the years, but I’ve stuck with Private Internet Access (PIA) for the past several—and it’s done the job well most of the time. Plus I can use it on 5 devices.
(Some sites eg your bank may be fussy and you have to go in direct w/o a VPN)
For identity protection, I use LifeLock along with common sense and a solid password manager.
Don’t get suckered by “free” VPNs—they usually cost you in other ways.
LINK PIA

Honestly I'd say steer away from software like LifeLock. Do it if it gives you piece of mind, but it's not totally necessary. Taking steps like keeping information safe, requesting IRS identification pin, monitoring credit report with Experian, etc will probably keep you plenty safe. Check out this thread: LINK
For VPN, I've used NordVPN in the past and liked it. They have browser extension, mobile app, and I even use it on my Apple TV. However, here's a list of providers with ratings and prices. LINK

I know nobody reads TOS, but this is absolutely right. Anything that is free is something you need to be skeptical of.

True: if you’re not paying for the product, you are probably the product.

Browsing via Mullvad is like wearing a ski mask in public.

When at home is a VPN really necessary?
I have to turn it off on certain websites anyway, so they can recognize my location.
