Yes. This is what you should do. You already have a nice router. If you need the ethernet ports on it, just buy a cheap gigabit switch to replace it. Then you can throw the router somewhere in the open, provided you can get power and ethernet to it.

This is my ultimate plan. I have a box running pfsense, so that is my router/firewall/dhcp server. So, my setup is currently cable modem ethernet to pfsense box, ethernet to my router which is now in AP only mode (connected to LAN port instead of WAN... although I run DD-WRT on it and use that to make the WAN port a LAN port).

Ultimately, I will buy a gigabit switch and then move the router to somewhere more centrally located to have better wifi coverage in my house.

thats kind of what i'm thinking. while the form-factor of a dedicated UAP is nice (little round smoke detector-looking thing), i know my router is damn strong and to get AC, 2.4gHz, 5gHz *and* a 10/100/1000 ethernet input, i'd have to spend upwards of $200 instead of $50.

plus since i already have it...

if i were buying new, i think i would look seriously at another $80 asus ac router to use as another access point since i wouldn't have to compromise the networking already in place.

Thats the other thing I'm having to give up..my beloved RMERLIN router firmware. I'm hoping I don't lose too many of the features I've been enjoying when going to the TMO router. I don't see a clean way to flash it. Looks like TMO has it fairly well locked down.

.

Since I haven't set anything up yet, I'm going to play around with the router & AP positions. Heck, I'm going to draw a quick pic & post it so you can see what i'm dealing with.

here

does this diagram make sense? I dont have the linear SF in this yet, but essentially the pool is on one side, we dont have a backyard because there's a steep vertical hill.

the house is long and rectangular, not boxy.

the side of house closest to pool is taller than the rest of the house and has large windows facing the pool.

i might move the router closer to the bedrooms and the ap nearest the pool to the right as well..so only need 1 AP in that config.

if that limits the at the pool, i might have to got a second one for the bedrooms.

i'll just have to see how the range is.

I've always installed DD-WRT or Tomato... but honestly, I'm not sure if it ever really helped or improved things... I just preferred the interface. In reality all I ever did with my router was open some ports and use DHCP reservations... you can do that with standard firmware these days. I don't typically need any of the advanced features. Now that I'm running a pfsense box, I want to revert my router to the stock firmware, but I'm afraid...

i liked how you coudl see all your devices and name them and give them icons (camera icon for ip cam, etc.) but i dont know what comes out of the box..i flashed rmerlin before doing that.

as for features, i took advantage of router-based NAS and FTP (for my IP cam security images & vids) and i'm honestly not sure what i'll lose by going with whatever tmo and asus have cooked up.

Once again, thanks for the information in this thread. Opened my eyes to some networking capabilities I was unfamiliar with, helping with my current problem and getting my mind around what I can do in my next house. Got my new AP hooked up tonight (turned into a pain in the arse to run drop down wall). Normal signal in my BR was sketchy at best and averaged prob 2-3mbps when connected. Now it runs up near 30!

Used a non-PoE switch and a PoE injector since I only had one AP (came with my cheap AP). Total cost was only $60 and fairly minimal. Spent 2 hours dicking with drop through wall vs a 2 min drop through the ceiling (wall mounted).
