Actually help or is it just a gimmick? I've read it reduces eye strain and possibly increase contrast and make grey's and blacks look richer, but you can never trust some of these articles. So does it help?

Eta... If not, is it worth it for the look, need Christmas ideas for myself to give to people and I have nothing

You couldn't see it anyway.

I don't know how much basic bias lighting helps with eye strain or whatever, but I hooked up one of my TVs with a DIY ambilight and the wife and I love it. Again I can't speak much to eye strain relief, but since the colors vary by what's around the edges of the screen, it kind of extends the TV and makes it seem bigger. It's more of an immersive experience, makes it feel more like you're "there" instead of just watching it through a screen.

It looks kind of like this:

And it does this:

I put in rope lighting in the case I built above the mantle last summer when we remodeled. Don't use it much other than for gatherings for games and holidays. Between that and the fireplace it makes for a nice addition.

I definitely prefer watching my TV with the Bias Lighting on when the room is dark.

But I think it is personal preference.

Been wanting to do this but it seemed over my head. Price and how hard is this to do?

The DIY route is a little bit involved, I wouldn't recommend it for the average person. All in I spent about $150 plus maybe 8 hours of assembly and configuration. There's some soldering and technical know-how required.

There are commercial products that do the same thing, the only one I really know about is the Phillips stuff. You can either buy an Ambilight TV with the lights built in, or buy the Hue Gradient Light Strips for $200 (for 55") plus Hue HDMI Sync Box for $230 plus the Hue Bridge/Hub for $60 to tie it together. Looking at about $500 or so for this. I honestly don't know if there are other options, I stopped looking after I built my own.

I really enjoy mine. It's definitely just a gimmick but a pretty cool gimmick. You can find the light strips on Amazon for like $25 that come with remote to change to all of the colors
