It's been about 4 years since I've had DTV, but don't they require internet for full functionality of the service?
And I'm not arguing that there aren't instances where people have rational excuses for needing ATT, but mostly it's people too afraid to take the leap.

No internet is not required. Once you get outside of a town or city in rural America there is not much high speed internet available. There are also motor homes, campers, house boats, football tailgates, ect that have Dtv and no wired internet available.
I could switch to a streaming TV service but in my situation it would be much more expensive than Directv. Using my Dtv login I also have the option of streaming most any channel like all the ESPNs on any steaming device or live TV on my phone or tablet with the Directv app.
