My office has been using Dell laptops/desktops for longer than I've been here (and that's well over a decade). Recently we ordered a couple of Optiplex 7090s, when they finally came in the DisplayPort A on neither worked.

I poked around their forums and found this thread from November 1, 2021.

I understand there's a chip shortage, but to still sell these things knowing they need a mobo replacement?

They did the math and figured out they would be better off financially handling it that way.

It's bullshite, but that's what they do.

100% true story. i had a 'business account' with Dell back in the early 2000s and after buying a computer from them that was a legendary deal (400sc! ) i proceeded to call them & sell it back to them one part at a time (RAM, power supply, hard drive, internal CD-ROM, floppy drive..) because i was upgrading everything to larger and faster and their prices for 'builder grade' components was twice what i could buy better components for. i was left with basically the CPU box and a kick arse logic board with their top-of-the-line intel chip at the time.

The total of what they refunded me was more than I paid for the computer.

I assume they've fixed this problem by now but damn that was a good time.

Also depending on who you spoke to at Dell, the refund of the components would vary.

good ol days. to nobody's surprise, CAD spammed a forum with a new post on every component sold back. a whole bunch of people followed it and while most were enjoying it, the occasional tigerwise and alxtiger of the day showed up to bitch and complain that i was 'ripping off Dell'.

Did you check the WWAN/WLAN setting in BIOS?

WLAN being on will block wifi connections if there is an ethernet connection (if it's docked and there is no enet, it will not block wifi). WWAN blocks mobile broadband.

They're both normally defaulted to Off, but you never know.

Both are currently off. It seems like enabling "Control WLAN Radio" might help the situation though? Currently, these devices do not disconnect from WiFi while docked, which seems to be causing a conflict.

Users are horrible about connecting to available wifi even if they have connectivity through their dock. If they are wired onto a domain but the wifi isn't, this could well cause "disconnects".

If it says "Control WLAN Radio", that's the older BIOS version (the newer version is prettier but not as intuitive until you click on the BIOS settings panel).

Turning on WLAN shuts off the wifi whenever the laptop is docked (so the user can't even search for a wifi connection, much less connect to one). We had to institute this because some of the people with laptops would connect to our wifi (set up for people coming on to do presentations and such) then call us because they couldn't connect to network drives, internal programs, etc.

I'll try it out on one. Might save me running around in circles with their support. Appreciate the help.
