Please don't lecture about me needing to cut the cord, I'm not in the mood for that right now.

Ok, the issue-
(older?) Cox Contour box, probably quite a few years old now.
4k TV.
Yamaha AV box.
Everything feeds into the Yamaha with HDMI, including the Cox box. To the TV with a good HDMI cable.

Noticed that I was having a lot of trouble with changing channels, started fairly recently. Zero trouble with Firestick, Roku, PS and other devices. Sometimes the Contour box would freeze up, wouldn't go to that channel at all (channel is unavailable at this time). Sometimes the channel would be pixellated and lots of artifact, with carry-over from last channel. I reset it a few times, very little relief.
Oddly enough, issues seemed to center on Fox News and CNN, where I could not even watch them. Often ESPN too.

So in fiddling around, I changed the Cox box settings from Best Available video output, to the lower 1080p (not 1080i).
This seems to have solved it.

Is this normal? I know Cox ain't putting out 4k, I thought 1080i was "better" than 1080p. Was this getting messed up trying to go 1080i?

It was NOT a Yamaha AV issue, it was always box-related.

Mine did the same thing for a few weeks. Reset multiple times. No luck.

Finally got a tech to come out. He ran some tests on the line coming in and didnt see any issues. Finally changed the Contour Box out and Voila. Working Fine now.

Save all your DVRd shows if you go that route. Lost mine.

1080p is better than 1080i. 1080p is full frame per scan, 1080i is 1/2 the horizontal lines refreshed per scan. Personally I would set the box to output the native resolution of the incoming feed and let your tv scale. It most likely has better processing and scaling than the cox box.

But like other posted said replace your box. If it's old you should be able to go by a Cox store and swap it out.

How do you save your DVR'd shows when you switch out boxes?

You don't unless Cox offers a cloud based DVR. More than likely you need a new box.

How do you save your shows on your DVR? It’s one of the reasons I still have cable.
