We have a small rental company and we are looking to get a computer program that will help manage billing, inventory, and equipment maintenance.
How do we go about finding a company that can shop the software for us?

Would need some more specifics regarding what functionalities you are looking for exactly, but I would try googling to see if there is something out there that sounds like it handles that stuff.
Or just pay me to build the application for you

Quickbooks will get you started, but it may fall short in the maintenance space. CAP Sellwise is another one I've used.

I have contacts in the rental software industry, if you have a tentative budget I can recommend some in your range. You looking for cloud based or local server install? What type of equipment? How many pieces of equipment you managing? Plan to have a counter operation? Plan to manage repair parts? You should expect to pay about 95-300 per month per user fee plus license cost for local install and implementation/training cost all depends on your needs.
Where is the business located?

This is true but qb sucks at managing rentals.

Business is in New Orleans.
We rent trucks, road tractors with trailers and Generators. We will not run a rental counter as we do not handle walk in business. We operate on referral basis only.
Cloud based is preferred as we are currently using one.
We do stock a shop inventory of parts but we do not sell parts to customers. We only use the parts for repairs.
We are over 75 pieces of equipment and your numbers sound more affordable than we expected.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

How many locations do you have, and how many distinct products and categories of products do you rent?
By the sound of it, you have one or <5 locations, and and a pretty small inventory. If that is the case, I would caution against being pushed in the direction of a lot of software suites that by the sound of it, will be more expansive and more expensive than you might need.
You may be better off just hiring a business analyst on contract with experience working with businesses of a similar size. Find someone who's already helped a business do what you're trying to do, and negotiate based on that.
You might just need a set of boilerplate operations and accounting reports built upfront and have them train you or an employee on how to utilize them.

Not sure if you saw my last post but if you are interested send me an email at tigersnipen @gmail.com (no space) and I can give you local contact information for a rental software company.
