What is the best program to use where I can highlight an area of my screen and record a video that is playing?

I'm having to watch some lectures for work that are embedded on a webpage which aren't going to be saved for later viewing. I would like to record them so I can rewatch them at my own pace as well.

I have access to both a mac and a regular windows laptop. Something for mac would be preferrable but will use what ever works best. Preferably a free option but willing to pay if there are no good free options.

You can use QuickTime on your Mac, it’s built in.

LINK https://support.apple.com/guide/quicktime-player/record-your-screen

Your file sizes will get large depending on length of your presentations you are watching

Good deal, figured the mac would have something built in for this that would work.

Much appreciated.

It depends on how the content is protected by the provider. For instance, I have AppleTV and TD open right now. If I were to hit CTRL-Shift-S to take a screenshot, AppleTV will black itself out, and I would only be able to screenshot things that were not AppleTV, Hulu, etc.
ETA: I mean Windows Shift S.

Windows 10 or later? Windows+G and open the xbox controls, you can record anything going on.

As Pepperoni said, Quicktime would be your best bet for Mac. But for anyone looking for a decent free screen recorder, try OBS Studio. Available on Windows Mac and Linux. Free, open source, and highly customizable. You can select only a portion of the screen, specific windows, and a bunch of other settings.

Can you select just a specific portion of your screen to record on QuickTime for mac?

lol..You guys kill me..

Instead of a downvote, help me know what went wrong..

our company doesn't allow screen recording and that's that..Its not an odd ask that people not share our internal info, we're a fortune 250 company

simply ask your IT dept what they recommend

This is what my son uses to scrape video game play. It works well, once you figure it out.
