Computer Froze Up & Can't Get It To Do Anything

My sister-in-law just called me because she is having problems with her computer. This is the information she was able to give me.
The computer is a Lenovo, it runs windows, but doesn't know what version and she has office 2003.
Today she checked her AOL email (yeah, I guess some people still use it) and then went to click on her chrome browser and then that's when everything froze, she had to shut it down then when she got it back up, it was really slow. She got a message from her virus protection software. She said her virus software was Micro something.. I told her to try to uninstall the virus protection and just use the firewall and protection microsoft has (I use IOS and haven't used microsoft in several years, but I know virus software sucks for standard PCs)..
She told me that when she was able to click start, it showed that there was recent software that was installed on her computer and it was all McAfee software, which she didn't install.
I gave her someone else to call, who would know more, because the only advice I had for her was to try to uninstall the McAfee software, but since it would freeze, as soon as she would do something, after booting it back up, she really couldn't do anything.
Can anyone offer some advice that I can maybe share with her?

Boot up in safe mode and uninstall anything new or buy a new computer.

This is what I wanted to tell her and is probably the best option.
