Cell phone situation

I am in my mid 50s and a true technophobe. I was doing fine with a very basic flip phone until my service provider decided to no longer support 3G devices. After 2 trips to the store I bought a new phone which the salesman assured me was just like the old one and very easy to use. Yeah right! After trying in vain to send a text for 2 hours I ripped the phone apart with bare hands and disposed of it in the trash. I bought a new phone which is a little better but not much. I have figured out how to respond to a text but nothing else.
It did not come with a user manual which makes no sense. My new toaster came with a manual even though everyone knows how to use one. I have pretty much given up on this phone too. Should I try again with another phone or keep struggling with this one? Or just not have/use a cell phone at all and stick with a landline? Anybody else have this problem?

The honest truth is smartphones are easier to use than flip phones. I understand that some people like to stick with what they know, but it seems that what you know is no longer available. You should just bite the bullet and get a cheap smart phone.
They're really nothing to be afraid of. If you can use this message board, you can use a smart phone. And get this... you can use this message board ON a smart phone. Amazing, right?
You have to learn how a flip phone works. You make a smart phone work how it makes sense to you. Sure, you will probably need someone to set it up for you, but that won't take long and it's a one time thing. My MIL is in her 60s, and I swear to you if she can use one by god you can too.
Seems all you do is talk and text, so you don't even have to concern yourself with apps for this or that or the other thing. You'll press one button for the phone, and another one for texts. The on-screen keyboard will pop up when you need it, and you just type. It will even fix most of your typos. And there will be one button that takes you "home", to your main start screen. If you ever get lost, just press it and you will see your familiar phone and text buttons. Easy.
Just try one for a few days. Make sure the rep walks you through calling and texting before you leave. It will take 5 minutes, tops. You just have to let go of the fear of something different, and remember that you can do anything if you put your mind to it.
And if you just can't get it, then rip it apart and throw it in the trash.

She uses it for TV remote, for home security control including using the cameras to see who is at the door or in the yard, she texts me daily to check on my health (spent last 2 months sick as a dog as my pancreas has stopped functioning).

She never really had to do much before with anything computers as her youngest son was an EE and very early adopter of computers. He was 4 months younger than I but died of a rare gene combo that caused blood clot stroke a few years ago.
So Op, suck it up, nose to the grindstone, or you're gonna have to admit you're slower than an 89 year old widow woman.

Worked in a cell phone store as a job during grad school. I’ve seen this situation several times. The best thing to do is go get a iPhone Se with a cheap 1-3 GB data plan. Those plans can sometimes be cheaper or same price as non data plans and have unlimited talk and text. Like the previous poster did, they can be easier to deal with than a flip.
If you go for a cost efficient smartphone, look into the iPhone Se models or older model iPhones. The cheaper androids usually had more issues. My stepdad is the same way, refuses to go smartphone but always uses my moms phone to do shite

My 85 year old FIL needed a new phone. He previously had a Samsung S8+. He had trouble answering with swipe feature. We got him the ATT flip phone, but couldn't migrate his contacts. I had to hand enter them, and it was horrible to type on.
Well, turns out he didn't like it at all. We took it back and got him another smart phone, one of the cheaper Samsung ones, I think an A12. It had a feature to just push to answer, and that seems to be working well for him.
I had forgotten how hard it is to type on a flip phone.
