Our HOA would like to install a security camera at the entrance of our gate. We have power and will use the nearest home wifi for internet connectivity. We are looking for something comes with no monthly fee. Any recommendations?

Thanks.

If you are doing this for car/license plate detection you need to look at Bosch or that level. These are $1-2k per camera. Don't skimp on cameras designed for homes. LADOTD uses Bosch for the interstate cameras.

Can you link some that you're referencing please?

Generally, I agree, but depending on circumstances, consumer grade cameras might work. For example. It the entry gate was well lit and the vehicles have to stop for entry, then you'd have a very good chance to get something with a consumer grade camera.

We looked into this when I was on the HOA, years ago. The local cops said that anything we recorded at the entrance was worthless to them, unless it showed a crime clearly. Basically, if a bunch of cars got broken into and an Altima was on camera leaving the neighborhood, they couldn't do crap.

We didn't think it was worth the $ and we didn't install cameras.

Fast forward to this year and we just wasted $5k installing FLOCK cameras at the entrance. I don't think we can access any of the footage as a HOA, but I do know local cops have used other FLOCK camera footage to arrest folks.

Probably better if every house just spent $600 on their own camera system.

This is the right idea, but $600 per house is not nearly enough if the goal is to provide footage that is actually useful to cops. Need to multiply that by about 10.
