I picked up a lightly used (year old, maybe 10 hours of use) Nikon D5600 with 18-55 VR lens from a neighbor.

This is my first foray into SLR, moving up from a Panasonic ZS-100. I primarily plan to shoot landscapes, nature, and the kid. Mainly just for shats and giggles, not planning on trying to do anything professional.

Suggestions for additional lenses?

I know I want/need to get an ND filter and polarizing filter. For SLRs, is it better to get the clip on kind as opposed to the screw on (assuming it is easier to move from lens to lens). Is there one type or brand that is better than the other?

Rocket Blower.

If you're doing landscapes, I'd also suggest a set of Cokin P Style graduated neutral density and reverse GND filters.

Nikon D5600

Hey, I used to have one of these.

Extra batteries and extra SD cards. I cannot stress this enough.

For lenses:

Nikon AF-DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G LINK: You should have at least one prime lens and this is a pretty low cost lens that I've used for portraits of my kids.

Tamron AF 18-200mm F/3.5-6.3 Di-II VC Zoom lens LINK: To me this was a good starter zoom lens that supports auto-focus and auto-stability without really breaking the bank.

I've owned both those lenses plus the two kit lenses I had with it, one of which was a 70-300 mm zoom lens but didn't support any kind of vibration control. The Tamron lens I used to take some pics of the Strawberry Festival I posted here a couple years ago or so.

Get an 18-200 walkabout lens. They work great on crop sensor cameras.

Maybe a fast 28 or 32 mm fast lens, F2 or F1.8.
Polarizing filter
Cleaning kit
Remote (the apps for remote shutter suck)
Lightroom or Capture one. I think Capture one express
has a free program for Nikon.

Good tripod and ball head. Checkout benro for some that aren’t too expensive.

Breakthrough photography makes great filters. Get a circular polarizer and an NDA filter. Get a large filter and use step down rings for the size you need for lens.

Buy subscription to Adobe for Lightroom/photoshop. Learn how to at least use Lightroom especially for cataloging.

Thank you to everyone for the input and suggestions.

I do have a copy of Lightroom Classic and have been using it for the past 5 years or so to catalog as well as edit raw files from my ZS-100.

I have a couple of tripods, both are three way heads, so I will certainly look for the ball head.

Lonnie Utah: I had never heard of or seen a reverse GND filter until your post. I love shooting sunrise at the beach, and that will be a must have for my bag.

Pechon: I have two SD cards - a 64 and a 128. Only have the one battery, so will look about getting a spare or two there. Do you recommend the Nikon OEM or go with something else? Amazon has some two pack with charger for less than the single Nikon OEM.

That should work for now with the SD cards. I would suggest looking into a decent cloud storage service to dump raw images in or a large external drive. This way when you get used to lightroom, you have the raw images.

I would pay close attention to reviews from verified buyers that may have some pictures when it comes to batteries. I don't remember the brand I bought but it was from Best Buy as I needed it in a pinch. Usually the non-OEM batteries won't last as long as they just don't have the capacity or the advertised capacity isn't exactly true.

It's a nice camera and the only reason why I sold it is my needs changed as I wanted to do more video. The D5600 can do video but has a hard limit of 30 minutes rather than continuous record. Other than that it does a great job with pictures and was a great way of getting back into an old hobby.
