well, damn. busted.

I thought you had a whole thread on these 3 switches but it might have just been this post.
i've talked about the lutron switches many times in various threads.

hey any new news on a home power monitoring system?
have you seen this one? it is cheap. which probably means it sucks.

why would anyone pay extra for a switch that requires its own hub?

plenty of reasons. whether you go lutron or zwave or zigBee, you will need a 'brain'.
you want those vs wifi because they MESH and can extend your HA solution pretty much as far as you can possibly imagine without ever dropping a command. the last thing you want is for your HA solution to rely on your shitty/unreliable WiFi signal..even with repeaters.

you missed my point. why would anyone with smartthings or wink buy lutron switches. they're more expensive AND they require their own hub and don't enhance your mesh zwave network. That was pretty terrible advice.

umm, lutron works with wink hub.
Posted on 12/12/17 at 3:14 pm to CAD703X
i realize. damn dude.
wink - more expensive, doesnt increase zwave network
smartthing, more expensive, doesnt increase zwave network, and requires its own hub.
AGAIN why would you tell anyone to buy lutron. BAD advice.

i'm so confused.
i'm just an unfrozen caveman lawyer, but i have lutron switches on my wink network and they are rockstars.
i bought them on sale (around $30ish) so no more expensive/no less expensive than GE or Leviton.
they also look way more professional IMO and when you consider they have given me ZERO problems since the day i installed them like 3+ years ago, of course i recommend them.
THEY ALSO DON'T REQUIRE A NEUTRAL TO WORK
now being the cheap bastard that i am and because my house is a petri-dish of HA odds and ends, i scrap together any HA that goes on sale meaning my house is a frankenstein of shitty GE link bulbs, hue, shitty quirky sensors, kidde smoke detectors, GE switches, leviton switches, intermatic, etc etc.
lutron is still head and shoulders above the crowd.
eta did i mention the lack of requiring a neutral for those with older wiring configurations?

you cant compare a sale price to a regular price. I'm glad you got them on sale but that shouldnt matter when making a recommendation.

I don't even know what this means. We are talking about a light switch on a wall, not dining room furniture. There isn't really much difference.

the GE ones dont give people issues either, are cheaper, and are zwave so it helps strengthen your HA mesh network.

this is a redeemable quality. If your house didn't have neutrals then certainly i would understand spending more on the lutrons.

do you even UX?
lutron switches tell me exactly how bright or dim the light is using LED lights. GE..um..there's a blue light at the bottom when its off. lol.
they also include a remote that lets you turn the light on remotely or install at the other box if the light is a 3-way. very slick and elegant way to prevent you from having to buy another super-expensive lightswitch. BAZINGA. lutron shoots, they score.
and yes, they look way more professional
the GE makes you buy another $20 unit for 3-way applications and come on, its ugly.

GE includes a little tab you can pull out to reset your switch in case of problems. nothing says 'our shite dont stink' like adding an ugly pull-tab on the switch itself so you can fix it when it messes up.
also my GE dimmer controls outdoor floods that i can't actually see from the switch. many times my kids go to turn it off and because of the UBER SHITTY UI, they don't realize they held the button down for longer than a second so they only succeeded in dimming the lights a little bit. its not until i'm leaving for work that i noticed the damn things are still on and have to pull out my phone and turn them off.
lutron OTOH
- ON BUTTON (boom)
- OFF BUTTON (boom)
- dim up BUTTON
- dim down BUTTON
- LED 'ladder' confirming how dim or bright light actually is
- remote/second lightswitch
ADVANTAGE LUTRON AND IT JUST frickING KO'D GE
Lutron is Melania Trump. GE is Rosie O'Donnell.

let's revisit using retail pricing:
GE Zwave dimmer $39.50
GE Add-on switch $19.50
$59 for GE for 3-way applications
Lutron
Lutron $59.95
You're right, GE is a whopping 95 cents cheaper.
For non-3way lights, Lutron is $20 more but since they give you a remote that can be wall mounted, technically you get a second switch for 'free' that is far more versatile than the GE one.

Mine did sometime say the light was on when it wasnt and vice versa while on wink.
But that i have a ton of them already i wasnt too mad about having to get the Lutron hub, plus i got it for a cheap price.
Also at most stitch location there is a GE fan dimmer switch so that is increasing my Zwave mesh.
And they do look better than a rocker switch. But that is just aesthetics and some people dont care about that.

no its not. GE UX is broken because you can partially dim a light and never even know it. thats 100% the fault of the switch.
lutron's UX has you covered on that by providing an ON and an OFF button and a DIM UP and DIM DOWN button (4 buttons) along with an LED ladder so you never have to guess if your lights are partially dimmed or not.
sure most people will find the GE 'good enough' (including my sorry arse) but you can't make an argument the lutron isn't in a league of its own here.

Lol, that is not what it is meant for. Its to cut power to the switch completely so you can change lightbulbs without shocking yourself

Oh, come on. The GE have a blue light that is either on or off, unless you disabled that. Your kids are just lazy
