apple watch cellular question

the wife and i agreed my 10 year does not need a cell phone yet. we want to get him an apple watch so we can text and or call him when is he out at friend's houses. Do we need an additional line for the apple watch that has the cellular capabilities since it will not be paired with one of our phones? Or does it have to be paired with a phone somehow?

It will have it's own service line. Mine runs $10/month on AT&T.

It will be assigned a separate line and cost me $10 a month as well. Got them BOGO last month.

So.... he doesn't need a phone but you're going to buy him a $500 watch
Like said above, I'd opt for a kiddie phone

Just microchip him, that’s what I plan on doing

It gets its own line... but it has to still be tied to a phone. If someone calls you it will still go to his watch. I don’t know if there’s a setting to make it completely standalone. I actually would consider this for my kid more than a phone to start.

Terrible idea since a 10yr old will more than likely crack that screen within a month
