Here are the details on the FaceID fail.
LINK
My first thought on this is people with kids that take their phones are going to have to be entering in their passcode all the time. Not having TouchID on the phone too definitely seems like a bad idea. It's not like they couldn't afford to include TouchID on the back somewhere. Maybe Apple can add an "Ignore face" list.
quote:
"People were handling the device for [the] stage demo ahead of time and didn't realise Face ID was trying to authenticate their face," an unnamed company representative is quoted as saying by Yahoo's David Pogue.
"After failing a number of times, because they weren't Craig [Federighi], the iPhone did what it was designed to do, which was to require his passcode."
...Apple has confirmed elsewhere that Face ID is disabled after just two unsuccessful attempts, unlike Touch ID, which requires a passcode to be manually typed in only after five failed tries.

Seen a few hands on videos with Face Id. Whats to stop someone from taking the phone and pointing it at your face? At least with Touch ID, they had to have your finger.
Or take a photogragh of you and hold up to the phone?

You have to have your eyes open.

They accounted for pictures-- a 2D pic won't work

Ahhh BUT what if I printed the photo out on a 3D printer???? Just kidding, thanks for the info. It's cool that they can do this. My cynical side says this is a mass governmental conspiracy to get our faces in a database to track us.... but they probably already do anyhow.

They say they got Hollywood effects people to make some masks for testing.

The FaceID details are only stored locally on your phone just like TouchID.

Supposedly they even had Hollywood make realistic 3d masks and taught the tech to recognize that too, but I''m skeptical
