Way too soon review:
I actually locked it up within 5 minutes of opening it. I didn’t repeat it to see if i actually uncovered a bug, but if anyone else wants to try:
I opened family sharing in the settings prior to logging into the App Store with my Apple ID (which doesn’t happen automatically during the setup). That settings screen froze. I had to hard restart to close it, and I could not fiddle with any other settings until I hard restarted the machine.

App Store:
Not every app available on iPhone/iPad is available at this time. Noticeable disappointments were the main video streaming apps (Netflix, Amazon...). I was considering using this as an extremely overpriced Apple TV for some of the added functionality, but without those apps, that isn’t going to really be a wonderful option.

Along those lines, I attempted to sync my Harmony hub with the computer. It’s supported by the hub. Perhaps my machine was too far away, but it did not find the hub, which is sad because Harmony seemed to have every single possible key combination available. It could very well be user error.

I had a snafu at the workstation I wanted to use this at, so I was relegated to a different spot than planned and had to use WiFi instead of internet. The WiFi chip seems adequate. I typically get around 300mbps both direct on my iPad. I was getting 350-380 on benchmarks with the mini. WiFi setup in this location is a UniFi AC Pro which is backhauled by about 60ft of Cat 6a to the router. I do not have wifi6. I do not plan on using WiFi on this computer, but it did do slightly better than my 9.7 iPad Pro from 2016 or 17. I’m not sure.

This may seem largely negative. A few things didn’t exactly go my way. Nothing particularly upsetting. I don’t think any of this is really negative . I’m not really used to the OS at this time. I will try to set up GarageBand next week and test out some processing and channel limitations. In terms of apps launching/loading and OS booting, I think it’s comparable to pretty much any computer with an SSD in the last 8 years that I’ve owned.

Other “in case you were wondering “ : it has a speaker that chimes when the machine turns on. It has a 3.5mm headphone out. It does not have a mic port or internal microphone. Another thing I hope to test soon is its dictation accuracy and how quickly it processes speech to text.

macOS can be pretty ugly in lack of responsiveness while waiting for disk access.

I had this experience with my old machine which was really amplified when my dumb arse took a crashed 7200 rpm and replaced it with a 5400 drive. I sort of assumed the problem was fixed with the adoption of the SSD. In my above post where I mention the unresponsive settings screen, it really brought me back to OSX Snow Leopard and my 2007 MacBook. I thought if I waited long enough it would come back to life, or that a forced shutdown done the right way may trigger it to work again. OSX, I have found, has an odd tendency to have frozen parts/prices/windows/app while the rest is functioning as normal. It was funny to see that has not changed (and it isn’t necessarily unique to MacOS, but I find it more pronounced there than windows and its Linux cousins).

That's not true.

Hmm. In the settings, it definitely does not recognize a microphone. The port is marked as a headphone output on the device and the tech specs from Apple.

Are you suggesting that the Mac mini does have an internal microphone that I am not finding “on” by default, or are you suggesting the port is mislabeled and should read line in/out or mix/headphone Jack?

Oh, snap. I must have misread that. I thought that was about the laptops.

Yeah, I mean I wouldn't expect the mini to have a mic. I'm sure it doesn't have a camera either.

For video conferencing the device with the camera or speakers usually has the mic. You'd have to use bluetooth, or an audio interface (or USB mic), or any standard webcam with the mini, which is pretty normal.

Camera? Sure.
But a mic? I’m actually somewhat surprised it doesn’t have an internal mic given how they love Siri and want MacOS devices to be able to receive calls on behalf of iPhones. It’s not a huge letdown or anything, and I very likely wouldn’t use the integrated mic for serious dictation (I have a Powermic II) if this is going to be fit for that at all. I would not use it for anything more than the most basic music recording (to get an idea out of my head somewhere it would stick before breaking out an I/o interface). It just seems like:
1) the device is meant to be seen and not take up space
2) they went through the trouble of an integrated speaker
3) they’re upgrading the MacBook Pro mics to “studio quality” and do think somewhat highly of their ability to use a mobile mic for more than webcams

In my mind, a simple integrated mic without a webcam unlocks a fair portion of the device’s capabilities, and this device is marketed to the “budget” crowd. I am looking forward to playing with the voice controls tomorrow

I honestly don't know why they bothered with this. The mac mini is just meant to be treated as the hub/brain. The prosumers they cater to are not normally going to use internal mics or speakers on desktops.

I get what you're saying. It's just not something I would have expected to be used very often. I guess this day and age, every device should have a mic not just for dictation but also for smart home integration and data harvesting.

I'm on a 2013 MacBook Pro and it's only really just now starting to show its age. Probably going to pick up the M1 MacBook Air soon

Same here, except my 2013 rMBP still runs like a champ as my daily driver. I am having to remind myself that I don't "need" to buy anything new at this point in time and this is gen 1 tech.

But damn, I love the idea of a completely noiseless macbook air that can somehow run circles around older 15" macbooks.

Boo.

How do you integrate it in your theater? Are you just bringing out mouse and keyboard when you need it and letting your server application send it to a network player, or does it play somewhat nice with Control4/creation/your control system?

I couldn’t get it to link with my Logitech harmony, but I did not spend very long trying. It appears to be supported by Logitech. Unclear whether Apple still supports that feature (for now).

ETA: check Costco’s website. Right now the 8/512 estimated delivery is 11/24 (and $40 off). RAM is not upgradeable, so maybe not the best option.

I know you're not asking me, but here is how I have mine set up. I use it for a Plex server and run OpenEMU. I use clients to access the Plex server (Apple TV, iPad, etc.). I have it hooked up via HDMi to the TV for OpenEMU.

Headless 2020 Intel Mac mini 512 GB SSD/64 GB RAM
WD 14 TB Easystore via USB3 (backed up to Backblaze for $5/month)
1 Gbps Ethernet

I use Screensharing and local file sharing via iMac.

The battery numbers these M1 chips are putting out is insane with the performance numbers.

I work in finance and the only reason I can't use macs all the time is because of stupid fricking Excel for mac is dogshit with no alt-keyboard shortcuts for the ribbon. If swear to god Microsoft keeps it shitty because they know a shite ton of finance people would switch to macs.

Yeah, I want one bad but I’m just going to hold off until next year. It’s really impressive what they’ve done and how well intel apps run on it out of the gate. Hopefully they won’t add a freakin Touch Bar to the air.

My next apple purchase will be the iPhone 12 mini.

I received my Air today, pretty impressed so far. I updated the OS and installed several apps without a hitch. Intel apps are working flawlessly, thank goodness as a I rely on some of them for daily activity.

I've had my M1 Air now for a week, could not be happier. I believe this is one of my best tech purchases in a long time, I'm really enjoying it. I've really tried putting it through some paces with some heavy work and it takes it all, I have not noticed any slowdowns. It's really nice to have something that is totally quiet and a battery that lasts me almost 2 work days.
