I log in to icloud and click "Find my iphone" - it searches for an ipad, mac mini and something else I forget what it was.... but no iPhone.

Then I click on Account Settings and right there is the iPhone, but I can search for it.

Just not intuitive that it's not linked in the "Find my" section but it's linked in the account section.

Not sure what you did wrong but my iPhone and literally all my devices show in the find my section.

Maybe there was an "opt-in" option when setting it up and I missed it.

But thought all apple devices would get linked automatically. which I guess it kinda is since it shows in one section of iCloud but not another?

You can turn it on and off in settings. Make sure it's on. The opt-in would have been initial setup.

You have to opt into Find locally on each device, for what should be fairly obvious security reasons.

Ya I must have skipped it during initial setup. It was turned off. I know I didn't go in and turn it off later.
