mine fell and cracked last night. Still works but would like to repair. And i am not paying someone $375 to do it. I work in IT, have replaced pc motherboards and such. But zero knowlege on a cell phone internals. Is this a simple task, or do i need to let someone that knows what they are doing take care of it. Thanks

I've replaced a couple of screens on apple devices with varied levels of success. I will say that there is a bit more skill to it than replacing components on PC's and laptops. It requires a bit of touch when handling the ribbon cables and using the heat gun, and re-applying the glue/sticky parts.

It's also easy to damage parts without really realizing - for example, when replacing the screen on an iPad, I inadvertently ruined the ribbon cable on the digitizer. So not only did I have to buy a new screen, but I ended up having to replace the digitizer as well. Also, I didn't have a proper heat gun, the hair dryer was very slow to unstick the glue and the million glass shards made my hands look like it was chewed on by a school of piranhas. I entered the sunken cost - new screen + new digitizer + time (weeks waiting on parts from the internet) > brand new iPad.

Technically, it's not complicated. You're just disassembling a puzzle and reassembling it. But in practice it requires a bit of skill and touch, and the parts you're dealing with are pretty fragile. Coupled with the fact that your phone is probably not more than a year old, I'd think twice about doing it myself.

Samsungs are glued, older Apples weren't. You have to be able to know how to heat up the screen and remove it without damaging everything. Also, you will need to replace the whole digitizer, not just the screen. Send it back to Samsung or send it to a professional. On an S8, they will charge you about $350. to replace it and won't guarantee it. You will also have to wait while it comes in from Samsung unless they have one in stock. I just had that problem with my S7. Costs me about $250, the speaker doesn't work now, but it is such an issue to get to the internals, I'm not doing it again. Research on Youtube, if you think you can do it, there are definite parts and repair kits to attempt it. I've done several Apples, but botched a repair on an older S6, so I didn't attempt this one. You can send it back to Samsung and get a loaner from where you bought your phone, it takes about three weeks and costs you about $40 for the switch, plus phone rental. Then another $40 to reactivate your phone when you get it back.

I had local repair shop do mine. They fricked it up two times in a row by adding a bump on top left of screen. They blamed it on me the first time cause I dndi not notice it. Then second time it was there again and I showed them before I left the store. They threw their hands up and we parted ways paying half price. Now I get to look at a bump all day with 4 or 5 dead pixels.

There are people doing full screen/digitizer replacements for $75 on eBay. Mine has a small crack in the right lower corner of the screen. I'm just gonna live with it for now.

Just get an insurance replacement. If you don't have insurance just add it now. ATT, Verizon, and Sprint all currently have open enrollments for their insurance programs.

You just don't want to mention it was damaged prior to you having coverage of course.

My S8 is cracked in 3 places. I want a new phone but can't justify it. They want 350 to fix the screen. I can buy a used essential off of swappa for 400. I just don't know how the S8 compared to the essential.
