Anyone digitize old Hi8 and Digital8 camcorder tapes?

I see multiple services that do it and at one time I was going to attempt it myself with a firewire cable & PC but never did. My Sony camera which reads both tape formats crapped out and would only record about 2 minutes at a time so i got frustrated and shelved the project.
I have maybe 50 or so (the Hi8 are 2 hours long, the Digi8 is 1 hour).
Anyone done this? I want to do it right because its my kids.

My mom got Sam's Club for her stuff. I think they used a third party service. They put them on DVDs and I ripped them to keep digital copies. Had no issues with it.
