Any way to improve performance of a new laptop?

I am buying one of my kids a Dell Inspiron from COSTCO for his birthday. I understand that there might be better options out there for a gaming laptop but I am limited to what COSTCO sells. The configuration is not able to be upgraded at the time of purchase.
Any suggestions on what I can do that would really help the performance of the laptop from Day 1? External drive? Additional memory? Etc. Thanks.
Here are the specs:
Intel Core i7 processor
4 GB AMD Radeon R7 M445 graphics
16GB memory
2.0 TB Hard drive

If the hard drive is not an SSD, then consider getting one first. My Dell laptop basically has the same processor and memory as yours, but the factory hard drive significantly hampered it. After I put in an SSD, it run much much faster.

Get an SSD. See if you can use 2 HDs in the laptop

Nothing you can do to improve gaming performance whatsoever, but SSD will dramatically improve day-to-day performance.

Putting a solid state drive in it is the single best upgrade you can make to it.

If you want gaming, look into the Asus ROG line...of course, depending on what type of budget/ballpark...
