We are having a haunted house for Halloween and I need something to make a rocking chair rock. There are mechanisms you can buy, but I am hoping to make a home version for next to nothing.

How do you want it to be controlled?

Just slowly rocked. I've seen little mechanical wheels with arms that rock the chair.
Since I started the topic, I got the idea of maybe using a rotisserie motor off a BBQ grill.

Figured you wanted something automatic but was thinking if manual was okay something as simple as bellows with a hose and balloon would work.
The rotisserie sounds like a good starting point.

Small oscillating fan perhaps? Might be too slow though...or not strong enough...bad idea.

Good idea. May work if it's strong enough

Something like a drill with an oval shaped block attached could get the right motion.

Windshield wiper motor. Check out Halloween forum
Also check out monsters in a box and mini monster in a box (Pandora's box). I did one with a car horn, battery, and a remote

I made one when I was a kid out of Erector Set parts.
Motor turned and pushed a rod forward and back. It was a little noisy but it worked.
