My 18yo granddaughter (no pictures) who lives in So. Cal is coming to the University of Arkansas this fall and will be living with us her freshman year.

WITH her consent, we've been talking about location apps so that if she needs help, we know where she is. We don't care about using it to control her or see how fast she's driving; she's free to live her life as she wants. But if she calls at 2am drunk and needs a ride home, we want the ability to know where she is.

Is Life360 the best option, or should we use FindMy?

What is the best locating app these days?

If you all have iPhones, the sharing location on there works. We have that and Life360 app on our phones. Sometimes the location is a little more accurate on one vs the other if someone is in a building. Out on the roads they are always the same.

The one advantage Life360 has is the ability to set up locations and get alerts when someone arrives or leaves that location. My teenager added the high school to our circle in 360, and if you choose to, it will send an alert to your phone if anyone in the group arrives there or leaves there. I know when she got to school and when she leaves. We also have some other locations saved as well, but that is the only one I really pay attention to.

The find my app also has the ability to add other devices. We have the family sharing set up with Apple, so I can go into that app and see iPhones, Apple Watches, Airpods, Airtags etc. And for the whole family. Wife tends to take her watch off at work and leave it there, or leave her phone at the house, so I can go in there to see if she left something somewhere.

We just have the whole fam on find my iphone.

After a student went missing at Auburn years ago, my wife freaked and made all of us do it. Push back at first from everyone, but it's turned out not to be a big deal.

Now the kids track us more than we track them.

And you can do the same using google maps no matter if you use android or iOS. Gmaps will let you geofence areas that will notify you when a person is coming or going from a certain spot. Gmaps doesn't show other people's location history or speed but it sounds like OP isn't interested in that.

It has worked well for us. I'll never forget telling my wife that my college freshman learned how to change his car avatar to a drag racer only for her to tell me it was because he was going over 80

Life 360 is a massive battery hog. I've used it on long road trips and always uninstalled as soon as I got home.

Thanks for the info guys, I'm going to recommend we just use the FindMy functionality from our phones.

I've seen that a few times as well. Does it still have the little flame shooting out the back?
