Anyone have experience using public libraries for 3d scanning a object to get an stl file? Or know of a business close to prairieville that does? What's the cost?

The Idea Lab at the Livingston Parish Library. They have a MakerBot Digitizer available, and you can call them to set up an appointment to drop off your item. It's limited to an 8x8 inch build volume and doesn't handle shiny, dark, or fuzzy surfaces well, so it’s really only good for straightforward, matte objects. If you need something high-precision or a complex part, you're going to have to go with a professional outfit like Infinity Engineering Consultants in Baton Rouge, GPRS, or Datum Tech Solutions. Those are going to cost you $150–$500 for small stuff, and the price jumps up pretty fast from there based on the complexity of what you need scanned.
