Would Müller have been red carded for retaliating against Pepe?

In my mind after the head butt, he would have been justified in swinging. Would he have been sent off for retaliation?

I genuinely don't understand why. Had it been worse than it was, shouldn't he be allowed to defend himself? What if he had concussed him, or busted his head open and caused him to miss future matches?

Well, two wrongs don't make a right.

In football, if a QB gets slammed by a dirty hit, he can't get up and punch the dude.

Players get eye gouged, beaned by a ball, kicked, body slammed, etc. in every sport. The aggrieved player can't retaliate in any of them or they are getting penalized, too.

That's not soccer, that's all sports.
