The "We don't even need Landon!" argument died a horrible, sluggish death today when Brad Davis started a (potential must-win/tie) World Cup game.

I thought you were older

Bradley has been non-existent and pretty much a useless, bad passing floater.

A few times today he challenged, without success, as he failed to create any opportunity other than that for the other team. He was saying "my bad" more than anything of leadership.

I saw him say nothing to any other player, no direction, no guidance, no education.

If you watch soccer, the leaders tell other players what they should be doing.....the USA has no one of the type.

You don't have to be the best player on the field to be a leader.

Ronaldo must be a fantastic leader in your eyes then.

And

But I'll take the word of SDVTiger over the coach and fellow player. You're right.

he inspires his teammates....he is not on defense

an assist, a goal, tons of legit opportunities created

Bradley has none of that, not good on DEF, and no creation of opportunities....what does he do?

Has he played well? No

But it's unfair to downgrade him, specifically his on field leadership, based on a small three-game sample. And frankly, it's ignorant.

Guy has been a rock in the central midfield for the National Team over the last six years, and has grown tremendously from being sent off in matches against Canada and Spain in the Gold Cup and Confederation Cups, respectively.

Untrue this game. His cross toward Yedlin in the 93rd resulted in our only serious scoring chance, and his lovely long pass to Jones nearly connected. He also would have hit numerous balls over the top if not for Neuer coming out of his goalmouth super early as he is prone to do.

He's also leading the WC in distanced cover, with nearly 38 kilometers (23 miles) covered in 3 games, which shows he's doing it on both ends. He's literally the reason we can play as static in midfield as we do, since Beckerman isn't a threat going forward and Jones is usually a liability defensively. The fact that he has few options to play the ball long to, since our wide midfielders are nearly as deep as our full backs, he hasn't been able to exhibit his best qualities, which are undoubtedly covering ground and hitting long passes to the flanks, as well as making late runs to support the front player.

The difference this tournament is that he is among the front players, a position he's never really played. Bradley is a classic number 6, but he's being asked to be our no. 10 due to the fact we don't have any other no. 10. The fact that he has struggled should be no surprise, but he has played better since the Ghana game, despite his few key mistakes.

Two things. Ronaldo is actually leading the tournament in tackles won, though I'm not sure what is counting as a tackle for FIFA. Two, Ronaldo is much more likely to berate or express frustration for a teammate than he is to inspire them.

If Donavan was 4 years younger, he would have helped. Present day Donavan would not have helped and could have been a distraction. Also other ageing players may have felt they too should be given special treatment.

Bottom line: We got out of the group without him, that was our goal and few folks gave us a chance. The correct choice was made.

FIFY
But I think even in his current form he's definitely "better", at least at attacking (and better at almost everything than Brad Davis) than some other people we played on the wings.

Would Donovan have played as defensively as Bedoya did? I don't think he would have matched Bedoya's work rate, and I think he would have tried to be a much bigger part of the attack. Did Bedoya playing that defensively help us squeak through the group better than Donovan would have helped us going forward?
We scored 4 goals in the first 2 matches, and even with a very defensive midfield, conceded 3. Were we likely to score more than 4 with Donovan coming off the bench in those 2 games? Maybe, but it's not like we score 3 against this kind of competition on the reg when he's in the team.

It's not as simple as "Donovan would have helped on the counter attack and with ball possession, so we would have been better off overall."
