Which American coach would you be pleased with if he was hired for USMNT?

Jesse Marsch
Gregg Berhalter
Peter Vermes
Greg Vanney
I really don't think I'd be happy with any other.

Pretty meh about all of those tbh.

I'd probably be as excited about Tab as I would about any of those.
I'd probably be a little more excited about Wagner.

If we were gonna go that route and stick with an MLS coach, it would need to be Oscar Pareja. American or not the system he built in Dallas has churned out so many prospects he needs to be the one we look to moving forward.

Or Tata

I would like Tata if we were sticking in the MLS. It would be neat to see what he could do with all of our young talent.

Of those 4, I think Berhalter would be the best hire right now, and also the most likely to take the job. If the Crew actually do end up moving to Austin, which thankfully looks less and less likely each day, I don’t think he’s sticking around for that. He has the Crew playing very well on a shoestring budget. They play very enjoyable soccer, most of the time.
Vanney is OK, but also benefits from coaching the most expensive and talented team in MLS. He has promise, for sure.
Marsch is interesting. He’s great at youth development. Most of the team that beat Atlanta last night are academy products. Most likely, he’s headed to either Leipzig or Salzburg next in the Red Bull family. Could be a USMNT manager down the line.
Vermes has the most experience of the four, but he’s pretty much the man at Sporting KC, and just signed a long-term extension. Not sure he’d be a great fit for the national team. He can be very tactically stubborn sometimes, but like Berhalter, his teams play well on a tight budget.
Oscar Pareja and Wilmer Cabrera are also potential options. Both have experience with the national team setup.
Tats would be great, but doubt he leaves Atlanta.

Vermes basically came out in a soccer America interview and said the federation has no vision. He also just signed a five year contract extension with SKC. Not great news for US fans when even coaches feel, still, that the federation is a shite show. I guess it’s not altogether surprising though.

I don’t think anything will change until we hire a competent GM. Which is a problem, since they’ve made the GM position so unappealing.
We’ll see how the World Cup window changes things. Lots of managers and officials will be looking for new jobs. Let’s hope Cordeiro knows what he’s doing.

What is it about the GM position that is so unappealing? I would love having a guy like Bocanegra in that position.

Limited power. No say over the youth system.

We’re just in a very awkward spot as a federation currently. The lower divisions of US Soccer are still in chaos, but that seems to be stabilizing a bit with the USL’s rapid improvement. We have a new president and our men’s team has the potential to be very good by 2022, but currently is far from that. Not to mention our current CEO, who oversees the GM, is retiring soon due to health problems. I think these concerns scare many potential candidates away, but there are certainly some who would jump at the chance.
This is a brand new position, so there’s a lot of uncertainty as to how it will work in practice. In theory, it certainly sounds great. Many aren’t happy over the lack of control over youth development.
I think Bocanegra is potentially the right choice. It needs to be someone who understands the unique challenges of youth development in this country and has a clear vision of what the men’s team needs to be in the long-term. We need to scout players much better and reach into untapped communities. We are way too big of a country to only have one full-time scout. The new GM needs to fix that.

I don’t think tata would do well as US national team manager. The style that atl plays with wont work with the national team

He changes they style of play to match the team that's available to him.

You mean to tell me that his Barcelona teams didn’t run a breakneck 3-5-2?

I wasn’t being serious, and I forgot about your anti-Spanish agenda

Well that, and the only way I could see them would be if I happened to catch a champions league match.
