That sounds familiar.

We have one player in our pool who's got a chance to play the middle "1" well, and he didn't play the last two games.

I think trying to play a 4-1-4-1 with two attacking fullbacks like we have the past two games is a recipe for disaster in CONCACAF.

It plays directly into bunker and counter tactics, as Costa Rica showed.

Didn't work very well for Germany yesterday. Made the D look like a sieve.

I didn't see the match but I have my doubts about most of the let's get rid of more defenders innovations.

On Torres, what may improve his game more than anything is just increased strength training. If he's going to succeed in the David Pizarro type role he has to be better at not getting muscled off the ball.

Germany had already qualified and was experimenting. Not really an indictment on anything.

I think Jozy can play lone striker, but he was absurdly bad last night. He couldn't hold the ball up at all. He just looked out of it.

Wasn't this something to do with him just playing/his agent complaining about having to come so soon blah blah something like that?

i think that a lot of it might just be a composure thing i.e. he's not used to being closed down as quickly as he has been and he is just sticking with what he is most comfortable with/fricking up things that he isn't as comfortable with. from the colombia friendly --> now, it looks like he is at least starting to get used to it.

i'd like to see him take up positions centrally to see if he can offer up anything goal-wise right now. it'd be easier for him to do it playing wide right, coming in on his left. he had one or two opportunities to do it against belgium but did this:

hits his chest, right foot, thigh, or whatever, it's gone.

I agree. Shea has been one of our better players under Klinsmann. He's making a case for a permanent spot in the roster, especially with our dearth of wing options.

For sure. I think he's sixth on the pecking order (Bradley, Holden, Torres, Jones, Edu, Beckerman) and pushing up. Jones might not be in the picture for much longer, at least past 2014 for sure. Teh rest are young enough to be around.

I feel like beckerman knows his role with the current squad and formation better than almost everyone else. Everyone else seems a little tentative and they are struggling to find where they should be on the field.
As good as Shea has been, he's been put in a pretty tough position. Before Jurgen he had 2 caps and now he's one of the focal points of the offense. His national responsibility has increased exponential in a couple of months.

Shea's strength right now is his naivete in the international game.

(And I mean that in the most positive way possible.)

He lacks the decision making filter to STOP going at people. He's very much like Donovan and Beasley were at that age (but considerably more skillful.) Donovan and Beasley eventually "grew out of it" and the US's attacking ability has decreased with it.

The challenge for Shea will be to increase his "on field intelligence" without diminishing his aggresiveness.
