Kei Kamara going to the Championship and being one of the best players for Middlesbrough, shows it's a pretty lateral move, in some cases.
exactly, mid table Championship to top tier league one

The lesser teams in the European leagues play each other in the Europa League

I'm sure there are more tournaments with non-friendly international competition.
I was specifically using Europe as an example so only CL really seems a decent barometer as far as head to head "non-freindly" results.
You could argue Europa League but I don't think it's much more telling than friendlies:
1) it's not really "lesser" teams in the sense of gauging league depth since it's top of table teams that barely missed CL or CL knockout rounds.
2) More importantly most clubs in the larger leagues hardly take Europa League more seriously than a friendly. It's just not worth it to lose a league match when you're chasing a Champions' League spot for Europa League.
If, for example, Liverpool were to be chasing 4th in the EPL, rests half their regulars and loses to a current 8th place club in Denmark I'm hardly going to use that as an example of how much stronger the Danish league is compared to the EPL. There's as many Europa League results that fit this scenario as vice versa.
