What's the best soccer game so far?

My kid just turned 9, and is on a U11 club team. I want to teach him different positions in a way that will interest him, and I think a video game would do the trick. He has really only played offense, but will play all positions now. Which game (Xbox360 or Wii) over the last few years is the most entertaining, that could help him learn how to play positions and strategy?

I don't know how much EA's Fifa series could teach him, but it's damn fun and may get him into the world's game.

Pretty much any FIFA game. The new one (2013) comes out next month if you want to wait for that. The most recent one (FIFA 12) should drop in price a good bit once the new one comes out. FIFA is available on Xbox 360, Playstation 3, Wii, PC, handhelds, etc.
I commend you on this idea. While FIFA won't turn your kid into the next Lionel Messi, it will help him get a better understanding of players, clubs, leagues, reading defenses, seeing passes, when to make the pass, what to do/not to do, how to position your defender, etc. in a very basic and entertaining manner.

Not so much. It might help him, but I know i didn't learn much, but then again a 9 year old might learn how to complete a through pass from FIFA 13.

I'd wait for FIFA 13 to come out. He'll learn more about the professional game (a lot), and he'll eventually look for things like movement and appropriate passes while playing.

Football Manager for strategy. I don't think it can hold the interest of a 9 year old though.

This is what I want to teach him. Impossible to teach this in the yard. He did well in his rec league games with getting open and looking for teammates, but This league will be another level.

Gameplay will be improved. Off the top of my head, they've got a better attacking intelligence, battle for the ball system and tactical free kicks in for 13.

Watching actual games will probably help him understand the game more than playing FIFA. That's something that really helped me when I started playing. You would probably have to watch with him to point out what guys are doing in certain situations and why.

Hes not much of a fan yet except national games. I occasially pause the tv and havehim show me where he should be, but e doesnt sit down for sports on tv much.

Why don't you sit down and watch games on the DVR with him? Explaining the passes and movement with the ability to pause and rewind? That would be way more helpful than a video game IMO. The game may boost interest, but wouldn't be that great as a learning tool.

Watching actual professional matches is easily the best way to actually learn the game. FIFA will lay a strategical foundation, but that's about it. It is a great tool to learn players, clubs and leagues though.
