and replaced them with a cup competition open to every team?

i have HOU @ KC on and not really paying attention... maybe if these teams had something more to play for i'd have more of a reason to watch. just play for the three points and top few go to CCL. maybe instead of relegation, send the bottom few to the US Open Cup?

one underrated thing about the EPL is that the announcers always seem to have a sense of urgency

That'd be lame. I do wish they'd play a balanced schedule again, that way we'd know who the best team is (Last year LA won both the shield and the cup)

That's not exactly how it works. Four CCL slots go to the Supporters Shield winner, MLS Cup winner, MLS Cup runner-up, and US Open Cup winner.

Every team plays in the USOC

Every team plays open cup qualification at least.

It wouldn't be our version of the FA cup if they didn't.

This year they changed to where every MLS team starts in the 3rd round.

I can't imagine any of the owners would go for that.

Because expansion owners paid 10's of millions of dollars to get into the league. Maybe in 15-20 years. MLS is going to have to invest in an MLS 2.

I know they won't but it sure would make the mls more interesting for those of us that enjoy euro leagues

We'll have relegation in America when soccer is popular enough for second division teams to make money.

We're not there yet.

The original owners lost hundreds of millions keeping the league afloat when the American sports audience rejected it. The first 10 years of MLS was simply survival. Keeping the dream of American soccer alive. It's amazing that we even have a league. We shouldn't be too greedy too soon.

the bottom few would get extra home games, but they suffer the shame of actually hosting the Rochester Raging Rhinos... The MLS Cup would become our FA Cup, and the Supporters' Shield the biggest trophy in our league

the fans are great, the more they get to know the sport, the more matches we need to provide that mean something

now i also hope the fans at games know what's at stake. if it means orchestrating LA and NY to be a bit better than everyone else, do it. Sunderland's had some dramatic goals in its history, but Ji Dong Won scored the winner against the incredible Man City. they're gonna remember that forever, and MLS teams need those moments

One of these days, I hope for single table with no playoffs. But these are mere pipe dreams, I know.

I do as well. I've come to terms with the fact that relegation is atleast 25 years away, if it's ever possible. However, I think the single table format that most of the world follows would be possible in the next 10 years if Garber and co. decide that a major cup can replace the American playoff system. The amount of MLS teams that make the post season makes me cringe every season.
