I was just reading the topic about the 2026 World Cup and was talking about the 2002 World Cup being my fondest memory of the sport, then went to Wikipedia to look at the 2002 World Cup page again. I recalled us losing 1-0 to Germany on a Ballack goal, and South Korea did as well in the semis. Though a US fan, this is when I got into watching Germany too and Klose quickly became my favorite player.
Then I clicked Ballack's page just going down the rabbit hole. And when I got to his Personal Life section I read this:
His son, Emilio, died in a quad bike crash on 5 August 2021 at the age of 18.
fricking terrible. And what are the odds of going down the rabbit hole and finding out something like this that happened the day I looked it up?

The 2002 World Cup was rigged. Italy and Spain got absolutely screwed against South Korea. The referee in the Italy match (Byron Moreno) was later arrested and sent to federal prison here in the US for heroin smuggling. Below is a video of the absolute disgrace those matches were.

Heaven forbid we ever draw Germany in a World Cup with Gregg as our coach because the media will run rampant with the revenge for 2002 storylines.
