The only thing wrong with this statement is it implies we once did have a Memphis Depay. The US has never had a Memphis Depay caliber goal scorer.

I think you're making out Memphis to be better than he actually is.

Sadly, I don’t think I am. This statement isn’t so much a reflection on how good Depay is, but more a statement on the low ceiling on American goal scorers to date. Depay has scored 117 goals in first division European domestic leagues and another 18 in uefa tournaments.
Clint Dempsey scored 57 in the premier league and he’s the closest one we’ve had. McBride has 36. Pulisic has 33 domestic league goals.
I think Reyna could be as good or better than Depay someday and hope he raises the ceiling for American goal scorers
