England hasn't had a good midfield distributor

Wilshere could be the answer. Way too early to tell.

it isn't even close that the EPL is the top league because of it's quality and depth.

it's the top league b/c its tv deal/sponsorship is the best in soccer in terms of distribution and total dollars

they buy players from other leagues who were developed outside of the english system

your argument would hold water if the top 6 epl teams were dominated by english stars (they aren't)

There is no reason why a top U.K. player shouldn't succeed in another league.

But they usually don't. There are a handful of English players who could play outside of England, but the majority of English players don't have the necessary technique to even play on average teams in other leagues. The English realize this, which is why they are revamping their youth structure.

so if it's not the best league in terms of quality and depth what league is? I gotta hear this

if we are talking about U.K. players then lets see the numbers:

Man U:

18/37

Chelsea:

11/32

Man City:

13/36

Arsenal:

7/30

Tottenham:

16/35

Liverpool:

12/32

the numbers are not awful. I didn't do it by starters which I think would have somewhat of an impact as well.

man u does have a lot of englishmen and they do buy up a lot of the young english studs

are they planning on replacing giggs/scholes with englishmen? doesn't look that way

chelsea: torres, drogba, kalou, essien, anelka, malouda

liverpool: kuyt, meirleles, suarez, rodriguez

man city: toure, tevez, dzeko, swagotelli, silva

spurs: modric, van der vaart, palacios, sandro, pavluochenko (tott's 2 playmakers are foreign)

aresenal: RvP, nasri, csec, chamackh, arshavin

actually yes it does. It's been reported long term they want to replace Giggs with Ashley Young.

you never specified specific positions I'm talking in general. You can't really change the discussion now.

In terms of playmakers it's not even a question that foreign players obviously dominate. It's a major concern imho.

well since this is a discussion on skill, i thought it was automatic that we were talking skill positions

and man u is looking at sneijder (dutch) and nasri (french) to be their playmakers of the future, by many accounts

nasri may be off the table with signing young, but he's going to be a wide player

if they don't get sneijder, it looks like they're going after modric

that's the central playmaking role that the english seem to be completely missing. the english attacking mids play more like second strikers, trying to shoot a ton and score (and it's why the national team cannot have lampard and gerrard on the field at the same time)

They should get more young players into the Ajax system. I think Joe Cole when he used to not suck was a good English playmaker but they don't have many. The fate of the national team's midfield lies on the shoulders of Jack Wilshere.

i still have no clue why more european nations haven't just copied what the dutch do (or america, for that matter)

it's not something that will produce immediate results, but it's obviously the best per capita producer of skill

i think national ego and a reluctance to shy away from the "style" of the country plays a role

germany, in its always-present efficiency, has completely changed itself (for the better)

You're absolutely right. It's part of the reason England hasn't been as successful as they maybe should have been.
