I'm more pleased with Riise than some of the people we've been linked with
I'm happy to see Riise go to Fulham since it's clear he's not part of Roma's youth movement. Along with Dempsey, they'll have 2 of my favorite players.
If I had to offer any critique based on his Roma days compared to top LBS it would be that his defensive marking can be kind of spotty, his left foot is a cannon but I'm not sure I've ever seen his right and his pace isn't a strong point to say the least.
However, at Roma, he more than compensated with effort, smart attacking positions and an uncanny ability to to team with Totti to pull game saving extra time goals out of thin air.
la magica norvegese
He never wears long sleeves.
I think Fulham fans will love him.

There's apparently some history with Fulham fans, he was all set to go there ten years ago and then at the very end opted for Liverpool (understandably, bigger club, Fulham back then was especially small, and bigger wages) and some think he used the Fulham bid to get a better bid. But I'm sure they'll warm to him.
I've only been a fan for 4-5 years so it doesn't bother me. And that's what I've always thought of Riise, great left foot, good attacking full back, maybe not the greatest defender. But we had Salcido there last year, good left foot, good attacker, fairly slow, not the greatest defender. So, like for like to some extent, except Riise's an upgrade.
Jol said he wouldn't buy anybody over 25 as Fulham need a youth movement too but at 2.5 million it was probably far and away the best option at left back. Fulham need an attacking left back for the same reason the national team does, Dempsey usually plays on the left but never stays out wide and you need somebody to provide some width.

Anyone watch any League One? How good is Dale Jennings from Tranmere Rovers?

He got a lot of hype. English players do terribly abroad in general, though. He's fast though.

McMaman is like the only one I can think of.

It happened a lot before the Premier League came into existence, with the European ban and what not. Glenn Hoddle played for Wenger at Monaco, and Hughes, Rush (though both are Welsh), Lineker, and Gascoigne all played abroad. Since then not too many, Jermaine Pennett, Robbie Keane, and others I'm forgetting.

Before my time following the great game. I do sincerely appreciate the history lesson.

Michael Owen and Jonathan Woodgate at Madrid
Actually English players should look into going abroad now. In Soccernomics Kuper and Syzmanski prescribe this as a means of improving the English game.

Most wouldn't be able to survive in top leagues. They'd have to go to less technical leagues where physique is important. Case in point, Luke Rodgers, as I doubt he would be able to play in the English Championship or PL with his technical ability, but can play fine in the MLS.

Especially at a young age IMO.

how does this make sense? The EPL is the top league.

the EPL is the top league isn't it? Despite not having the #1 team.

Sure it's the top league but I think a lot of English players would benefit from the technical training they could get elsewhere.

true but I think it would have to be at an early age to have more than a minimal impact.

I agree but only because it has 4-5 truly top clubs compared 2 or 3 each year in German, Italian and Spanish leagues and all those top clubs are pretty international. After the top 5, I'm not sure the EPL is any stronger at all for teams 6 -20 than the other 3 top leagues.
I love to watch Fulham with Dempsey but I'm not sure they'd finish any higher up the table in Serie A or Bundesliga.
