Does that mean we are out of it for Alvarez? Whatever prices were being bandied about were fricking terrible. I feel like if we kept it under wraps we would have gotten him, but as soon as other clubs heard they tried to jump in.

I hope he is at LFC next season...

Good lord, I just read this in the ESPN article...I know Arsene is tight, but I didnt realize you guys have never spent more than that...

Arsene Wenger evidently rates the 23-year-old highly, and is willing to smash the club's previous record transfer fee of £13 million when bringing Andrei Arshavin to the Emirates from Zenit St Petersburg.

'Pool and Arsenal better hope that Man City don't get into the race, as they'll eventually price everyone out. He's their second option after Sanchez. Mata is also Barca's second option if Sanchez doesn't go there.

Interestingly enough, I don't think the Financial Fair Play rules will do anything to stop this. I remember reading somewhere that Man U has something like £200 million in liquid assets that they are just sitting on. My theory is that they will use this money while to circumvent the FFP, since up to £26 million is allowed in losses as long as the owner does not lend money to the club. The earliest UEFA can enforce any punitive measures is 2014.

I wish we could trust UEFA to have a transfer advisory board, which could artificially limit transfers by accounting for player performance and years remaining on the contract, but I think they are as corrupt as FIFA.

Bayern seems to be trying to buy up the teenagers. They're heavily linked with Dale Jennings and Takashi Usami

Doing the Arsene Wenger.

1) Buy teenager
2) ????
3) Profit

Sadly, that's how it usually goes.

Follow the money trail. Teams like Arsenal and the Bundesliga that actually run teams like a business are fricked.

Owning a soccer team is not profitable, nor should one expect it to be.

The transfer fees teams pay certainly don't help. The new UEFA rules only state that they want teams to break even, though, but I don't think the majority of teams will be able to do it.

Why not? It is a business.

Pick up Soccernomics. It is a fantastic read, and it can explain it far better than I can. Basically players cost a lot of money, and teams end up spiraling into debt. Someone comes in, buys the debt and then owns the team, only to see that the same pattern occurs. The book also explains why soccer is not a business in the traditional sense and why treating it as such leads to massive losses. Again, I'm paraphrasing but trust me on this one. How many successful clubs do you see making massive profits?

BBC reporting Arsenal's board are willing to sell Cesc if they can agree with Barca on a price. They quote a "senior Arsenal official."

Looks like the inevitable is finally happening.

Also, with regards to sports franchises, I don't think running one needs to strictly be a business where you're trying to maximize profits, but that doesn't mean they should be toys for wealthy billionaires to throw away money. Obviously European soccer is different than American sports, but the Yankees and Red Sox make bank every year despite their massive payrolls. The big Euro clubs should be able to do the same, but instead they are the ones in the most debt.

I wouldn't be surprised to see more tactical flexibility without Cesc. Probably see a lot more of the 4-4-2. The 4-3-3 should still be used for big games and European matches, and luckily we will still have the forward personal to run that.

Also I hope to dear god that we can get around £40 million for Cesc.

Anywhere north of £35mil would work for me.

Also, seems like we're still after Alvarez. I'm with you in not being a big fan of the move.
